Love this film, and the fact that John Goodman wasn't Oscar nominated for it is ridiculous. To your point about how it fits in with the other Cloverfield films, I think that the Cloverfield films are meant to be spiritual successors to each other, and not direct sequels. I don't think any of the three films are set in the same universe, because they all have different monsters/aliens. They're connected in the sense that they're all about somewhat similar situations (alien invasions). I think of it kinda like the show Black Mirror (which you should definitely check out if you haven't seen it), where each episode is set in its own universe, but they're connected through certain themes.
