I just wanted to make a post about Chinatown. This film is crazy hahaha. I’ve only done this with one other film and that was Amadeus and (lowkey) Portrait of a Lady on Fire. This film is such an expert level of filmmaking and I hope I only did a good job at scratches the surface of why these things we call good art…matters! If anything, it inspires me.

Okay, rant over. Just had to say I’m excited to post that video. I enjoy seeing my improvements on how I can verbal explain both the technical AND genuine emotion I journey into with these films. I could talk forever about it, but just know..GOOD FILM. 🙏🏽✨

I’ve never even watched it(but I know the plot and I’ve seen the ending), but I know it’s an all time great for good reason.

That doesn’t go to say that all the other films I don’t get inspired by..! I loved Gattaca just as much as Amadeus, if we’re talking about Human James and not Filmmaker James. I can also see the beauty in things like The Goonies as well as the more obscure and visceral like La Haine. All is to say…continue to learn and continue to be diverse! Especially if it inspires you. That shit is dope. 🙏🏽♥️

Chinatown is an absolute masterpiece! I was exposed to it in my film history class and hope all courses in film teach this cinematic marvel because it needs to be seen especially to anyone with filmmaking aspirations.

For visual beauty I recommend Shakespeare in Love. Koyaanisqatsi is another great one, but it's only music and visuals, no plot or even characters. You've already reacted to Ran, so that one's out. For best acting, I'd probably put in Steel Magnolias and 12 Angry Men, but I think you've done those. So many more amazing movies out there, but I trust you'll get to them. I still must really push Tommy Boy. It's such a good comedy, I know you'll love it.

James, does the communication skills you are developing by reacting for the channel also help you in your filmmaking career? I would imagine if you direct, it increases your ability to explain what you want in a scene.

James, if you liked Chinatown, could I submit a request for Double Indemnity (1944)? Its pretty much the archetypal film noir.

Chinatown has as its backdrop the 1907 Rape of Owens Valley in CA. In order to get people to move from the rural areas to the city of Los Angeles, someone orchestrated dumping all the freshwater from Owens Valley into the ocean to force a drought of sorts and make people want to move. Robert Towne, the screenwriter, moved the date from 1907 to 1937 for the script.

It would be great if James reacted to any real classic noir. I think Murder My Sweet might be fun since he would probably recognize the plot of The Big Lebowski in it.
