I don't think you noticed.... seconds before all hell broke lose on the plane... while Chuck was in the bathroom....he takes his watch off and washes his hands. Took his watch off.... At the start of the movie, we see that Time is all-important to him. It controls his life.... And the moment his character arc enters the trajectory that puts him on that island, time as he knew it ceases. It isn't something he can control. So of course he takes off his watch. And of course the pocket watch doesn't work. Also, notice his name. Chuck Noland. Chuck means something cast to the side. As in Cast Away. Noland as in "No Land." In fact, the movie is called "Cast Away." Not "Castaway."

They shot the first half of the movie.... Then Tom Hanks spent a YEAR losing about 50 pounds... Then everyone gathered back together and filmed the rest of the movie, picking up at the "Four Years Later" mark.

Wilson is just the means by which we get to know what he's thinking. It's just a narrative device. It also shows the abject loneliness he experienced.

Glad you noticed that the movie did not have a soundtrack until the moment Tom Hanks breaks beyond the barrier of waves that had imprisoned him on the island for years.

The director included the whale because it's the first sentient thing that lays eyes on Tom Hanks' character the entire time he's been lost... validating his existence once more. Zemeckis said this in the director's commentary track on the DVD.

Mister Lou

Have you seen The Terminal already? because that's one of my all time favourite Tom Hanks movies! You gotta check it out, if you haven't yet.

Underwater Sunlight (Eddy)

During his losing-weight break, Tom Hanks was working on "Road to Perdition" (directed by Sam Mendes), which is also a great film. Have you seen it, James?
