Y Tu Mamá También is one of my favorite films and I actually wrote a paper on it for my film class this semester I’ll link it here if anyone is interested. Y Tu Mamá También was directed by Alfonso Cuarón and stars Maribel Verdú as Luisa, Diego Luna as Tenoch, and Gael García Bernal as Julio. Cuarón crafted a mesmerizing narrative about Mexico and the struggles of discovering and accepting your true self. This is a masterful film that is a perfect representation of the human condition and how you can’t know who you truly are until you are placed in a position that tests you. Y Tu Mamá También points out and deconstructs the elastic, freeing nature of femininity compared to the toxic, fragile nature of masculinity as represented in all three characters throughout the film. Y Tu Mamá También begins with both Tenoch and Julio each having a final sexually charged session with their girlfriends before they leave for a trip to Italy. Tenoch and Julio having the summer off before they start university, decide to go on a final, sexually explosive road trip as a final goodbye to their youth. They meet an older woman named Luisa who is the catalyst that leads both young men to discover who they truly are, and that they both are bi-sexual. After an explosive climax where Tenoch and Julio end their friendship over discovering that they both have slept with each other’s girlfriends, the trio gets intoxicated, and Luisa initiates a threesome. As the film closes, Tenoch reveals that Luisa had died of cancer a month after they all parted ways. Tenoch and Julio have one final, bittersweet conversation before leaving and never seeing each other again. The character of Julio begins this journey as a flat character in a primarily toxic masculine role, but by the end of the film is a round, more dynamic character that has discovered who he truly is. His true identity is shaped throughout the film through various ways that begin all with Luisa. When the film begins Julio is arrogant, entitled, and crude. The way he views women at the onset of our story is also a sign of his immaturity, he states that all “left-wing women are hot” to Tenoch on the highway, and he sleeps around with his friend’s partners. Julio is very insecure about his social and economic status while also attempting to be like Tenoch. The narrator of the film states that he lights matches in Tenoch ‘s house to mask his smell. We can also see how that he is slightly homophobic by using the word fag whenever he finds a chance. However, he expresses deep homoerotic behavior throughout the film. For example, he masturbates with Tenoch at the country club, fools around naked in the showers with him, and compares his penis to Tenoch’s. The way in which Julio and Tenoch argue is very similar to that in a committed relationship. They are extremely passionate about each other and keep trying to understand one another. The rift in their friendship begins with Julio confessing that he slept with Tenoch’s girlfriend multiple times. This is also where the shift in Julio’s identity is seen for the first time, he contemplates how he has only felt like this once before and he regrets what he did to Tenoch. Lucia having slept with both of them, states it plainly “typical men, trying to mark your territory, when all you want to do is fuck each other!” Julio’s manifesto symbolizes his youthfulness and once he breaks away from it, by sleeping with Tenoch and Lucia, he is aware of who he is and us as the audience sees him as a fully round character. Alfonso’s point with this film is what you learn about yourself can be uncomfortable and as Julio should have done, accept that and not let society decide for you.

Dude, if you haven’t seen Le Samourai, check it out before Ghost Dog. GD is highly inspired by it and it’s a classic.

Wow I wish The Hunt would win but I doubt that will ever happen. I've never seen anyone react to it and it is a fantastic movie.

I picked Ege of Tomorrow and Train to Busan as I have seen those already. Only other 2 in the list that I have watched are The Hunt (brillant film) and Apocalypto (also very good). If any other wins, it will give me a good reason to finally discover them, so I can watch your full length reaction!

The Fountain is a very underrated film IMO, and has one of the all-time best soundtracks in all media—a collaboration between Clint Mansell, the Kronos Quartet, and Scottish post-rock band Mogwai. The film itself is very conceptual, about love, death & loss, and the fear & acceptance thereof, portrayed over three narratives/timelines. It's definitely one that demands a certain type of viewer.

Y Tu Mama Tambien, Adaptation and Fallen Angels are the ones that I've seen that I'm voting for. Of those I would love to see Y Tu Mama Tambien reacted to the most. I also voted for Apocalypto, The Hunt and Ghost Dog (dir. by Jim Jarmusch, he's made such amazing films like Stranger Than Paradise, Night on Earth and Dead Man). Those three films I haven't seen but I hope James can watch because they seem great. I've never watched a Vinterberg (who directed The Hunt film but I love Danish movies like Terribly Happy from 2008 (underrated dark comedy crime film!) and Dancer in The Dark (and other Von Trier films). I didn't vote for Edge Of Tomorrow while I really like the film I'm not as curious on his reaction for it. But I'm happy however the polls, eventually movies I am more interested in James to react to might be seen like The Lobster.

29th street please. I almost guarantee nobody will have seen this movie. But it is not only one of the most quotable movies ever made, and one of the funniest movies ever made oh, but it's also a true story

My brother watched it when he was in the navy, on a ship. He acts like a tough guy covered in tattoos, but he watched it obsessively and showed it to his shipmates. They were confused. 😆 shows it can really have an impact on all types!

There are so many interesting choices here that it is becoming a difficult choice for me: King of Comedy, Wong Kar Wai, Ghost Dog, & Y Tu Mama. What do I want James to see that I've seen too, or what do I want to watch along with the community?

ADAPTATION!! This film will blow your mind James, especially the script. When you watch it, keep in mind that it is technically an adaptation of the book “The Orchid Thief” but from the brilliant mind of Charlie Kaufman. There is no other movie like it.

aw! I see Y Tu Mama Tambien on the poll. A foreign film series would be sick. Wild Tales (Argentina) from 2014 is one of the best films I've ever seen. I really wish more people would watch that masterpiece. Its one of the best revenge movies ever made in my opinion.
