Fallen angels by Wong Kar Wai is amazing. And 8 1/2, it's about a director with writer's block (and so much more), classic meta cinema. Oh and that's where Tarantino got the Mia/Vincent dancing scene shot from

Anonymous

I highly recommend the 1979 war movie “apocalypse now” it not only contains some of the most impressive and influential shots and technical feats but also a gritty and telling story with deeply rooted psychological aspects on the darkness of humanity.

Robin Williams, Ed Norton and many more great dark comedy

Beasts of the Southern Wild - underrated indie movie filmed on a $2 million dollar budget but managed to snag Oscar noms for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Best Actress for Quvenzhané Wallis, who I believe is the youngest person to ever get nominated for best actress at 9 years old. Also one of my favorite original soundtracks of all time. I'll also nominate The Florida Project, the movies have similar vibes.

Marvelous Dolcy

Im going to limit myself to two suggestions. 13 Assassins (2011) a samurai film by Japanese enfant terrible Takeshi Miike. And The Wild Bunch (1969) western by Sam Peckinpah. Cheating, as I've already made my requests but I can't help myself. If you haven't seen it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. Really out there but truly excellent film in my mind. On that Jim Carey kick, 'Jim and Andy' is a documentary about the making of Man on the Moon, which I actually found more interesting than the film itself in a lot of ways. Perhaps a tad pretentious in parts, I found it a challenging watch in places (if you've seen it, I'm sure you'll understand why) but it's a truly fascinating watch. I'd argue a must for anyone genuinely fascinated with the process of making movies (especially from the actors perspective).

I think you should check out Krisha. It is one of the best debut films I’ve ever seen. A family drama almost designed like a horror or suspense film and the soundtrack is gnarly! Excellent performance by the main actress as well.

Brittyn Lindsey

This is unrelated because it’s not a movie, but one of the best plays I’ve ever seen before was written by McDonagh called “The Pillowman” - I highly recommend looking it up and reading about it. It was dark, twisted, funny yet sad. When I saw it in NYC, it starred Billy Crudup and Michael Stuhlbarg. It was so good that I bought the script to re-read (since I can’t re-watch it!).

Definitely check out Silence by Martin Scorsese. One of the more compelling movies I've seen. And probably my favorite performance by Andrew Garfield to date!!

Welcome to The Doll House (1995) dir. by Todd Solondz is a great dark comedy. Pather Panchali (1955) dir. by Satyajit Ray is an older film from India it's not a Bollywood film, it's Bengali. Wes Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa are admirers of the director just to name a few. I am extremely curious what you'll think of these two films.

Layer Cake, Lord of War.

Watching Brick is such an incredible feeling THAT NEVER GETS OLD. It's easily the best film recommendation I've ever gotten from a movie store employee.

Delicatessen was 🤯. I worked at a multiplex cinema when that came out and my manager wouldn't let me work the theatre that one was showing in because I was too young, but the other ushers used to sneak me in.

This movie really stays with you. I can't even figure out why it's so memorable and good. James could maybe help enlighten me?

kimsmk

Every time I watch it I have a different opinion of it.

kimsmk

Ever see his last film? That's the only one I haven't watched yet. My fave is probably Solaris.
