The Master is such a great film. I think that now that you’ve realized it is a PTA movie you gotta rewatch it at some point and you might pick up on some things you didn’t on the first watch. I think the original idea behind the movie was that Hoffman’s character was going to be based on L Ron Hubbard, the creator of Scientology. The “processing” scenes are also similar to the “auditing” thing they do in Scientology. Hoffman is fantastic as usual but Joaquin really carried the film for me. This movie isn’t really about the plot so much as it is more of a character study. It’s the same with PTA’s next movie “Inherent Vice” which I was disappointed with but I only saw it once and I think I need to give it another shot since it’s the only PTA movie that I didn’t really love too much. The one after that though, his most recent film “Phantom Thread” is phenomenal. It gets weird AF towards the end but in the best way possible. Also, it probably has my favorite score of any of his movies. Maybe Jonny Greenwood’s best work (aside from Radiohead stuff)
