James, you may wish to read up on Barry Lyndon a bit before watching. They used special lenses to get the exact look that Kubrick wanted. I'm glad you're finally getting to this one. The story is good, but the filmmaking itself is great.

Barry Lyndon is a great film, but I'm pretty sure it isn't going to make for a great reaction. It's just too much of a slow burner.

I don't know if you've already watched a good amount of some Japanese Cinema, but some Akira Kurosawa would be cool to start off with. Most notably for me Yojimbo.

I'd really like to see your reaction/thoughts to Only God Forgives if you haven't already seen it. It's Refn, same director as Drive. Very polarizing, but if only for the cinematography alone, it's a pretty unique film experience.

So, Barry Lyndon, a lot of movies from that period I found to be sad and depressing. I didn't like the color grading as much as you. I think it did help with the sadness oh the flick. What did you think of the pacing? I don't think it needed to be nearly as long as it was.
