Love that you loved it. Still shocked this didn't even get submitted as the French entry for the Academy Awards. But yeah every frame is a painting unto itself and the two leads are mesmerizing throughout. A glance in this film conveys more meaning and story than a lot of films do throughout their entire run time. Still my favorite film I've watched this year.

Such a beautiful film. A few things that might interest you: Back then of course it was common for arranged marriages amongst the nobility, but before any betrothal was finalized the husband would often be sent a portrait his potential bride to be. Hence many times the husband would see a portrait of his wife long before ever meeting her. This of course just adds to the tragedy of the romance, as making the portrait is giving Heloise away. Also, the book that Marianne draws herself in for Heloise is Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the chapter with Orpheus and Euyridice (the one they read together). The text on screen roughly translates to ""a flower that is in bloom only lasts a short while because the winds that made it bloom are also what make it fall apart." Which is a perfect analogy for Marianne and Heloise relationship.
