----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leaving behind the scorching sand and bright sun of the Gerudo Desert, Urbosa entered her abode for a well-deserved rest. Storing her scimitar and shield, the towering woman with bronze-like skin set her muscular body upon her couch. Brushing her blue-painted nails through her long, thick ponytail of scarlet hair jingled about the golden rings hanging from her ears, arms, and around her neck. The glamorous gold accentuated her typical attire of her battle-worn breastplate and the blue skirt bearing the image of her divine beast, Vah Naboris around her shapely waist. Considering how long it had been since she had a chance to rest, she let out a deep exhale from her blue lips and let the air rise past her prominent nose.

   “Pardon me, Lady Urbosa?”

Urbosa tilted her head back down to see a Gerudo soldier standing in the doorway. Letting out a sigh, she stood up and approached her. “You may speak.”

“We were going through the artifacts we recovered from the ruins and came across something that seemed out of ordinary.”

Urbosa raised an eyebrow. “How so?”

The soldier pulled from behind her back a thick tome wrapped in brown leather and placed it in Urbosa’s hands. Holding the book up to her face, Urbosa found herself staring at the image of a black and white eye upon the cover. Flipping through the pages, she couldn’t even begin to decipher the strange runes written on them. While she wasn’t a scholar by any sense of the word, she had spent enough time exploring Hyrule to know that it wasn’t anything resembling the land’s dialects.

Urbosa shut the book to look over the ominous eye once more. “It is interesting, but I can’t say I have the slightest idea of where to start digging up information for something like this. Send a message to the princess. This seems to be more her expertise.”

“Right away, Lady Urbosa,” the soldier said, bowing towards the champion before taking her leave.

Returning to the comfort of her couch, Urbosa continued to gaze upon the strange tome. Cradling her cheek in her hand, she flipped her fingers through the pages. Nothing seemed to show a hint of the book’s purpose. The aimless browsing came to a halt as she returned to the back of the front cover. Straining her eyes, she saw the lines printed upon it begin to morph and distort. While the letters were still foreign to her, something in her mind made it click as to what they meant.

“To the owner of this book,” the text read off, “you are in great danger. You have come into possession of this extraordinary tome so that you may avoid a terrible fate. Within these pages is a gift that will allow you to avoid certain doom. Be forewarned that, in exchange for its knowledge, the book will take from you the things dear to your heart and change your body in various ways. Do not fear. When the task is done, you will be the savior of this land. I wish you the best of luck, Urbosa.”

Urbosa read over the lines a few times to try to make sense of it. Her instincts told her that the book’s supposed “gift” was nothing more than a curse. However, something about the way it spoke of the land’s future resonated with her spirit to ensure her it was telling the truth. While she wasn’t thrilled at the notion of giving into whatever entity had created the tome, she nonetheless turned the page in hopes of taking a miniscule amount of information from it.

Just like the previous page, Urbosa managed to understand the text after a few tries. Curiosity turned to keen interest as she reached the next page and began to extract the very information she needed. If asked, she would be unable to explain the specifics of what she was reading. The unfathomable knowledge nevertheless pushed her to continue under the notion that the words before her were vital to the survival of both herself and Hyrule.

At some point she was forced to leave the couch to grab some form of nourishment. Keeping her nose in the book the entire time, she thoughtlessly grabbed a bag of sweets and sat back down to continue reading. This ritual continued for hours on end, her snacking and studying only interrupted once to light a torch in her home. She only looked away from the tome once she heard someone knock on her door.

Tilting her head up, Urbosa saw the same Gerudo soldier from the previous day standing in her doorway. Noticing how the sun reflected off of the soldier’s armor, Urbosa realized that it was morning. Rubbing her eyes as she tried to comprehend how long she had been reading, she brushed off stray crumbs from her chest and stood up.

“Do you have anything to report?” Urbosa asked, tucking the book beneath her arm and grimacing as she felt something bristle against it.

“No, Lady Urbosa,” the soldier replied. “The troops were worried when you didn’t show up for morning training.”

“Ah, I see,” Urbosa said, rubbing her chin and feeling a stray layer of grease across her skin. “Apologies, I got a little caught up in reading last night. Tell the troops I’ll be there as soon as I can. Just give me a moment to refresh myself.”

As the soldier took her leave, Urbosa turned back to try cleaning herself up. Washing away her residual grease and sleepiness with a splash of water from a jug, she tried to make sense of how she had lost track of time. Leaning closer towards her mirror, she felt something push against the basin. Stepping back, she noticed that her former six-pack abs had been buried beneath a soft, thin layer of pudge. Pressing her fingers against the growth and feeling fuzzy, miniscule hairs against her skin, she recalled what the book had said about taking something from her in return for its gift. Taking a deep breath and putting it off as just a result of her night of binge eating and reading, she stored the book in a safe hiding spot and headed out to the training area.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The usual pride and accomplishment Urbosa felt after a training session was nowhere to be seen as she trudged back to her home. She didn’t have to think hard as to why she was doing so poorly with her exercises. Nor did she need the wide-eyed expressions and hushed whispers of the Gerudo she passed to confirm her worries. It was an unfortunate adaptation that she had gotten used to no longer striding through the streets and demanding respect with her presence. In place of her former glory was a sorry mimicry of who she used to be.

Arriving at her home, Urbosa let herself collapse onto the couch. Leaning back, she ran her fingers across the layers of sweat that had accumulated on her pudgy belly. Exasperated at how her body still struggled with feats that used to be trivial to her, she momentarily let her fingers swirl around the prickly red hairs that had developed around her belly button. Sliding a hand along the extra chub around her arms led her to a patch of similarly unruly hair beginning to sprout from her armpits. Her self-examination brought her towards her chest piece, taking note of how the restrictive garment at least gave some support to the added heft of her chest. Pulling her skirt out from between her chubby butt cheeks, she settled into her seat and cast a glance towards the probable cause of her drastic degradation.

While she was afflicted with a strange blurriness when she tried to see it from far away, getting up from the couch and picking up the book let her gaze upon its ominous eye. Chewing on her bottom lip helped to sate her fury at the cost of reminding her of the way her front teeth seemed to grow longer with each passing day. Given all the reasons in the world to toss the book into a bonfire, Urbosa couldn’t bring herself to get rid of it.

The multiple sleepless nights spent pouring over the book’s contents had piqued the champion’s interest each time. Every page brought with it a new discovery in exchange for further worsening Urbosa’s condition. Even after such a stark reminder of what was happening to her body, she found herself tempted to sit down with a plate of honeyed fruits and once more peruse the mysterious tome.

   “Lady Urbosa?”

Urbosa shuddered in her seat at the sudden call out. “Yesh what-“

She paused, putting her hand against her mouth in response to the sudden lisp. Paying mind to the soldier’s bewildered expression, she cleared her throat. “Do you have something to report?” she asked, speaking slowly to avoid repeating the same verbal tic.

“You have a visitor from Hyrule Castle.”

A shiver ran down Urbosa’s spine at the thought of someone from the castle seeing her in her sorry state. “Tell them to come back another day. I have…training to do.”

   “But, Lady Urbosa it’s-“

“I shaid, they can come back another…”

Urbosa trailed off as she saw a familiar visage in her blurry vision. As the figure stepped forward, she recognized all too well the woman’s long, golden blonde hair and blue tunic. Glancing at the set of familiar bright blue eyes, Urbosa wiped her mouth clean of excess spit as Princess Zelda approached her.

“Urbosa are you feeling alright?” Zelda asked, sitting down next to the champion and getting a good look at the distorted features her extra 50 pounds of fat had given her.

“Yesh, I’m fine,” Urbosas replied, unable to stop her lisp and hide the tome behind her back at the same time.

Zelda placed her hand on Urbosa’s still shaking fingers. “Is something wrong? This isn’t like you.”

Taking a deep breath, Urbosa tried to calm herself and ignore the whistling sound coming from her front teeth as she exhaled. “You’re right. I should know better than to try and hide a problem when it’s causing me so much trouble.” Reaching behind her back, Urbosa yanked the book from beneath her bottom. “This is the culprit.”

Taking the tome from Urbosa, Zelda flipped it opened and looked over the incomprehensible lines of text. “This isn’t like anything I’ve ever seen before,” she stated, straining her eyes to try and find some clue to its nature. “You said you were able to read this?”

“Yes,” Urbosa replied, taking the tome out of Zelda’s hands. “I couldn’t understand a word at first, but then it suddenly all clicked.”

   “What does it say?”

Urbosa’s downtrodden mood was struck down by a grim reminder of the book’s promise. “That it holds the key to preventing our doom.”

“It must be somehow connected to Calamity Gannon’s return,” Zelda pondered. “Then again, I fear it might be a trick to further curse your body. Allow me to bring the book back to the castle and I can-“

“There’sh no need,” Urbosa said, cradling the tome close to her bosom. “I don’t know why, but I believe that what the book says is true. Even it meansh loshing who I am, I need to learn as much ash I can from it.”

“But how can I study your condition if I don’t have the book?”

Urbosa pointed her finger towards a corner of the room. “I made copies of the pagesh and stored them there. Everything ish exact to the letter.”

Getting up from the couch, Zelda began to search through the shelves. “Where exactly?

“Over there,” Urbosa replied, finding it hard to direct the princess as she entered her blind spot.

After a bit of searching, Zelda managed to find the copy with Urbosa’s guidance. Settling back on the couch, the princess looked over it and compared it to the original book for any discrepancies. “When did you have time for this?”

“To be honest, I’ve had to shirk a few of my usual dutiesh ever since I gained this,” Urbosa replied, grasping her prominent potbelly. “Not to mention I can’t shee more than a few feet in front of me.”

Zelda pondered for a moment before reaching into her sack. “Here,” she said, holding up a pair of wide-rimmed glasses. “One of the servants at the castle needed a few spares so I grabbed some from a local vendor. Try it on.”

Taking the spectacles in hand, Urbosa carefully balanced it upon her nose. Peering through the lenses, the blurriness that had plagued her vision began to dissipate. While it didn’t fully clear up her sight, it was a drastic step towards her former self.

“Are they working? Do they fit alright?”

Rather than reply to Zelda’s questions, Urbosa made a beeline towards her bookcase. “Theshe are exquishite,” Urbosa said, her eyes darting back and forth as she rapidly read through the books. “Although they could ushe shome fine tuning.”

“I’ll make sure to send the merchant your way to get a proper fitting,” Zelda said, taking the copy of the cursed tome in her hands. “Are you going to be alright?”

“Yesh, yesh,” Urbosa replied, not looking up from her book as she continued to read. “I think I’m on the verge of a shenshational dishcovery. I’ll talk to you shome other time.”

“If you say so,” Zelda replied, leaving Urbosa’s home just as the champion opened up another book to continue her studying binge.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A month away from Gerudo Town mixed with reports from messengers had done little to dissuade Zelda’s fears. In her head, she still had the image of the strong, confident woman she knew as Urbosa. Upon finding an inkling of useful information from her copy of the accursed tome, she had set off at once from the castle to return to the desert town.

Asking the Gerudo women about Urbosa strengthened the princess’s worries about the condition of their champion. Urbosa had stopped showing up for training all together several weeks prior, preferring to stay inside her home at all hours of the day. Whenever someone came to visit, it was mostly a brief affair to drop off a collection of books or food deliveries to feed into her worsening habits. While Zelda would have liked nothing more than to scold the fellow Gerudo for the treatment of their champion, she found herself unable to talk for having spent so much time away in a vain attempt to understand the strange tome.

Upon reaching Urbosa’s house, the princess took notes of the thick curtains hanging over the windows that blocked out most of the sunlight. Stepping up to the entrance, she put her ear to the door and heard the sounds of heavy breathing between chewing mouthfuls of food. Preparing herself for the worst, Zelda knocked on the door.

“What ish it?” she heard a voice call out.

“Urbosa, it’s me, Zelda. May I please come in?”

There was an uncomfortably long pause. “Shure, come on in.”

Pressing on the door, Zelda flooded the dimly lit home with natural light. The sun’s ray’s crept through the room to reveal a figure seated upon Urbosa’s couch that was easily twice her original size. She resembled the Gerudo’s champion and Zelda’s old friend, but the differences were far worse than she could ever have imagined.

Urbosa’s crimson hair was an unkempt mess of grease-riddled, unruly strands that was barely contained by a slipshod ponytail hanging across her fat back. Her head was lowered down as she continued reading the book balanced upon her pudgy thighs. The hunched over position bunched up the various fat rolls that made up her doughy gut and partially hid the bushel of red hair around her belly button. Pausing to take a bite of a muffin drizzled crumbs along the fabric of her newest chest plate, the material looking a few pounds away from allowing her meaty, hydro-melon sized breasts to burst free. Trying to ignore Urbosa’s thick limbs and the wiry hair sticking out from her armpits, Zelda cleared her throat in an attempt to get her attention.

It took a few tries, but Urbosa eventually tilted her head up. The dark circles around her eyes were put on full display as they were reflected behind the thick glasses balanced atop her oily nose. Zelda stared in awe at the pair of buck teeth that jutted out of the champion’s unpainted lips by half-an inch. Taking a moment to brush back one of hairs in front of her face, Urbosa set aside her book and stood up. Taking a step forward shook about what little parts of her skirt weren’t busy showing off unflattering angles of her chunky rear.

“Ish shomething wrong?” Urbosa asked as she pushed up her glasses.

   “Urbosa, what happened to you?”

“It’sh fairly obvioush,” she replied, thinking little of the spit that escaped her mouth. “I have continued my shtudiesh of the book in order to prevent ush from facshing schertain doom.” Walking over to the side of the room, she remedied the wedgie she had given herself during the short trip to the bookshelf. “I’ve alsho been shkimming through varioush other booksh in order to put my newfound knowledge to good ushe.”

“But what about your training? How will you be able to protect Gerudo Town, let alone Hyrule, in your condition?”

“I made shure to train the other sholdiersh before I became like thish,” she said, pulling out several books and letting her hairy, fatty arms keep them aloft. “They’ve far exscheeded my prior abilitiesh after I re-organized their training shessionsh.”

Adjusting her glasses once more, Urbosa dropped her load of books on a table and stepped aside to gesture towards them. “During my shtudies, I think I may have found a way to improve the shecurity of the divine beashtsh.”

“Urbosa, I’m glad you’ve gained an interest in academic pursuits,” Zelda said as she watched Urbosa grab another armful of books. “However, I can’t ignore what that tome has done to your-“

Zelda went silent as she scrambled to catch a book thrown at her by Urbosa. Opening up the book revealed the champion’s handwriting mixed in with small splotches of food stains. Driven by her own curiosity, Zelda proceeded to flip through the tome. Each new page brought with it a revelation that made her re-think their strategies against Calamity Ganon’s return.

“Do you like it?” Urbosa asked, pushing up her glasses as she showed off her buckteeth in a confident smile.

“Urbosa this is amazing,” Zelda said, gaining a fraction of Urbosa’s book obsession as she flipped through the pages.

Letting out a snort at the princess’s fervor, Urbosa stepped behind her. Pressing her gut against Zelda’s back and resting her sagging bosom upon the princess’s head, she clutched her hands to guide them. “Here, I would shuggesht shstaring on thish page,” she said, turning towards the middle of the book. “It lishtsh the numerous problemsh that could occur should Ganon gain the capability of taking control of the guardiansh.””

“How did I not think of this before?” Zelda asked, marveling over the detailed list of upgrades to the divine beasts to prevent attacks from within. “I must tell the other champions and get right to work.” She turned on her heels and ran towards the door, only stopping once she stepped into the threshold and heard another snort from her friend.

“Urbosa,” Zelda said, once more looking over the champion’s degraded body. “Are you okay with this?”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” Urbosa asked, reclaiming her spot on the couch after collecting a new armful of books to read. “Shure I may not be ash fit ash I ushed to be, but I’m shatishfied taking up a new role as a shcholar to asshissht where I can.”

Urbosa’s words carried with them a smile that brought back images of her former glory. Comforted by the champion’s words and expression, Zelda said her goodbyes and made her leave back to Hyrule castle. Once more left to her own devices, Urbosa slouched back down on the couch, pulled out a sack of candy, and resumed increasing her brain power to ensure the safety of the land and people she held so dear.
