Finally back in the swing of things after my vacation; orders are packed, IRS bullshit is resolved, and I'm warmed back up after not drawing for a while.

I ran into this problem where when I sat back down to draw again, everything just looked like shit. I couldn't fucking draw at all. Sometimes I come back from a break and I'm better than ever, but this time wasn't like that. Normally I just brute-force it, but I thought I'd try something completely new.

You'll notice to the top left some drawings of a MK23. For guns I usually just trace either a 3D model or a photo in the case of ones that I own. It's extremely time efficient, and with my packed schedule its usually necessary. However I don't want that to become a crutch; I SHOULD as an illustrator, be able to draw anything from construction. It was really stimulating, it gave me a chance to practice fundamentals again. Eyeballing the proportions was especially helpful.

With the human form, you have a lot of latitude to fuck up things like perspective, because bodies are dynamic and organic. Firearms however, are completely solid; highly specific. If you mess up the proportions it'll be obvious. All in all I'm pretty proud of how they came out. Again, done from construction; no 3D or tracing involved.

After the MK23 I moved back into characters. I'm going to be drawing a LOT of Kara in office wear for the next two NGK chapters (excited??). Probably a good idea to actually sit down and study, truly study and take notes, on how dress shirt fabric moves with the body. I can't stress enough how much the written, verbal notes helped. I'm going to start doing these for every new item of clothing I draw from now on; expect to see them posted here.

The office Kara was the result of all my studies thus far. I haven't drawn her in a bit!!! I think when all is said and done she's still my favorite.

The mk23 is a classic choice, especially for a NEET like Kara, I'm sure she's played Metal Gear a few times. But I personally like this USP 45 compact purely for it's conceaibility while maintaining the 45 acp caliber.
