How I Shade Easy

OMG Chrissa you seriously posted this at the right time! I’ve been feeling suuuupper annoyed with my art right now and haven’t loved the last four pieces I’ve done because of the skin in particular. I’ve been using Multiply since forever for my shadows and Soft Light or Lighter Colour for my highlights. I’m really looking forward to trying this out! I also once used Add for my highlights (omg lol everything glowed 😂) which I never go near when it comes to skin, so I’m nervous to try Overlay - but I’m definitely going to give this method a go regardless! Also, what I appreciate is how you approach shadows. I overthink EVERYTHING I do and get stuck in my head way to much when it comes to details, so hopefully with this technique it’ll force me to simplify and not cause me to go around in circles.

Oh boy, I totally understand what you mean by overthinking, especially when it comes to lighting. The way light behaves can be really technical and complicated. I had a professor that explained it in such a complicated way that it totally went over my head for so long. I still don’t understand everything but tbh, you don’t have to comprehend all the nuances of lighting to make a good looking piece. I hope experimenting with my method helps you out! 💖

I’ve been feeling so blocked because I’m having a hard time with lighting and shading. Thanks for sharing!!
