Hello everyone! My latest video is now up on YouTube, and it's about the only* car-free neighbourhood in Canada: the Toronto Islands.

The Toronto Islands community is really bizarre, and it has an interesting history, so I wanted to make a video about it for a while. It's crazy that there's a car-free neighbourhood hidden right off the coast of downtown Toronto!

In this video, I talk about the Islands, but also about how crazy it is that we can't build another place like it. I love car-free and low-car places, and I really wish there were more of them in the world.

The Only* Car-Free Neighbourhood in Canada (and why you can't live there)

https://curiositystream.com/notjustbikes for a 26% discount on Curiosity Stream + Nebula for free. Only US for the first year, which, you gotta admit, is a pretty insanely low price for what you're getting, eh? Just off the coast of Toronto, Canada's largest city, you'll find a group of 15 small car-free islands. These are unique in Canada, because they have the only* car-free neighbourhood in the whole country. But just in case you thought you'd like to live here: you can't. There is a waiting list and strict rules for home ownership, which begs the question, why can't we build more of these places today? In this video I explore the history and present of the Toronto Island, and talk about other car-free places in the world that I'd also like to cover in future videos on Nebula. *there is actually another car-free neighbourhood in Canada, Harrington Island, but it's extremely remote and nobody goes there so that doesn't count. :) If you're already on Nebula, my Giethoorn video can be found here: https://nebula.app/videos/notjustbikes-the-dutch-town-with-canals-instead-of-roads-giethoorn --- Patreon: https://patreon.com/notjustbikes Twitter: https://twitter.com/notjustbikes Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/notjustbikes One-time donations: https://bunq.me/notjustbikes NJB Live (my bicycle livestream channel): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9v57F4xz46KaDsvWfCv8yw --- Credits, References, and Additional Information Timbits by Raysonho @ Open Grid Scheduler / Grid Engine - Own work, CC0 https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=39057236 Historical photos of Toronto Islands: https://digitalarchive.tpl.ca/objects/347886 http://torontothenandnow.blogspot.com/2015/05/58-torontos-lost-island.html https://torontoguardian.com/2016/05/vintage-photographs-toronto-islands/ https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Toronto_Islands#/History Map of Toronto Harbour, 1857: By Hodder, Edward Mulberry, 1810-1878 - https://www.flickr.com/photos/internetarchivebookimages/14770718161/ Source book page: https://archive.org/stream/harboursportsofl00hodd/harboursportsofl00hodd#page/n36/mode/1up No restrictions https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=43608286 TORONTO UNDERWATER TUNNEL WALK - From The Island Airport To The City 100 Ft Beneath Lake Ontario- 4K TheKenContinuum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x3J0E7DCOw Kids, including adopted children, can inherit Toronto Islands’ exclusive and restricted homes Toronto Star https://www.thestar.com/life/homes/2021/02/17/kids-including-adopted-children-can-inherit-toronto-islands-exclusive-and-restricted-homes.html Sidewalk Toronto project loses privacy expert over data anonymization policy StateScoop https://statescoop.com/sidewalk-toronto-project-loses-privacy-expert-over-data-anonymization-skepticism/ Digital privacy concerns will follow Sidewalk Labs to next venture, says former consultant StateScoop https://statescoop.com/ann-cavoukian-waterfront-toronto-digital-privacy-concerns-sidewalk-labs/ Sidewalk Labs cancels plan to build high-tech neighbourhood in Toronto amid COVID-19 CBC News https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/sidewalk-labs-cancels-project-1.5559370 --- Chapters 0:00 Introduction 0:37 The Toronto Islands & how to get there 1:45 Quiet cycling 2:06 An aside about asphalt 2:35 Amenities on the Islands 5:21 The history of the Islands 7:52 The convoluted agreement 8:56 Why can't more people live car free? 10:19 Sidewalk Toronto 11:03 Autoluw in the Netherlands 11:42 More car-free & autoluw places 12:20 What is Nebula? 13:07 Curiosity Stream + Nebula deal 14:02 Patreon shout-out

Wonderful video! I always forget there's housing on the islands... we used to go to Centreville fairly often when I was a kid and that's what comes to mind when I think of the Toronto Islands. I'll be visiting the city in about a month (first time in ages I'll be there not in December) and I think I'll add a tour of the homes on the islands to my list. :) Also love the Timbits flash, that quote by Davis is pretty good, and I had no idea Jack Layton designed those bike racks! They're so ubiquitously iconic.

Yes! The islands are great! As for Jack Layton, he credits the invention of the bike racks to a colleague of his (David Dennis), but they apparently came up with the idea when they were at the pub together! 😁

Another great video. As a proud Toronto native till 2007, I hardly recognize the place. But the islands were always a great place. Funny how citizens flock there for tranquility, but those same people will fight against bike lanes on Yonge St.
