Guys let me just tell you that this episode was amazing and I think its is up there with one of my favourites, as you all know Im someone who loves back stories and information about characters I love getting to understand them a little bit more and this episode really did a good job a shining a light on the previous Avatar, and his relationship with the fire lord, also the parallels between Aang and Zuko, overall great episode I really enjoyed it!!

Remember back in Book 2 the first episode "The Avatar State", we learned that in the Avatar state you're at the most vulnerable - if you're killed in the Avatar state the reincarnation cycle will be broken and the Avatar will cease to exist. I think all the Avatars are taught to use this power wisely and not just willy-nilly flip it on like a light switch and risk getting killed in this state which might explain why Roku didn't use it constantly to stop the Volcano. Fun fact - at the end of Book 2 when Azula shot Aang with lightning she actually killed him in the Avatar state so the reincarnation cycle was technically broken temporarily, until Katara resurrected him with the special Spirit Oasis water. This episode was absolutely fantastic and definitely in my top 3, there was so much important backstory so we finally understand how and why the war started. The fact that Zuko is a descendant both Avatar Roku and Firelord Sozen is genius and you've seen him constantly struggle with doing the right thing, battling good & evil. Some cool things about this episode - whenever you see the shots of Zuko in prison talking to Uncle Iroh, the angle was purposely shot to make Zuko look like he's in prison behind bars instead

Sud, Roku's Earth Bending teacher, is the earthbender in the intro and the original design for Aang's teacher before they thought of Toph
