How do you show your kids that you’re struggling? What can you learn from your younger self?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are taking a look at sci-fi/comedy/drama The Adam Project. They dive into the lessons we can learn from our younger self as well as lessons parents learn from their kids. Jonathan shares healthy ways parents can let their kids know that they’re struggling so they can empathize with their parents. He also talks about reflecting on your past experiences through journaling. Alan praises the exceptional performances by the exceptional cast, especially Walker Scobell for being the perfect match to Ryan Reynolds. And the exceptional performances get him in the feels.

Before watching this episode, I had sort of written off The Adam Project (even though I hadn’t watched it) because of the genre and my experiences of the main actors (who are good but not often dramatic and affecting), but now I can see just how good a film it actually is; thank you for that. However, I would still like to beg you to do an episode on Top Gun:” and/or Top Gun: Maverick (if it’s not already in the plans), because I’ve loved them since I first saw them.

"I think it's easier to be angry than it is to be sad, and I guess when I get older, I forget that there's a difference." 🤯 So many truth bombs is right.

I just watched this movie last week. Not a dry eye in my living room. I definitely reflected back on my attitude toward my dad. He is an alcoholic who won't give up drinking. I need to remind myself from time to time it wasn't all bad. If you could react to, "A man called Otto", this is a movie I didn't want to watch, but my boyfriend talked me into it. Trigger warning, it does depict suicidal attempts. Again, just another movie I was shook that Netflix created.

It's surprisingly good! Glad you enjoyed the video. We do have plans for Top Gun at some point. :)

Damn I need to watch this one. I think I should probably also have my daughter watching it when she's old enough to actually want to pay attention it. 😅 As a single mom, I do my best to tell my daughter every day how much I love her, and to make sure that, no matter how dog tired I am, that I pay attention to her and the things that matter to her. I'm not always successful, and I do screw up from time to time. Hell, sometimes my screw ups are hilarious: Me: "Careful about running on loose rocks, you could sli-AAH!!" *proceeds to slip walking on said loose rocks.* 5yo: 🤣🤣🤣 I think she knows I love her. 😅

That's great to hear :) It would be awesome to see Top Gun Maverick and the relationship between Maverick and Rooster.

I think something meaningful to take away from this is that no matter how much we may think we've failed, caring enough to even think about that makes us good parents. Bad parents don't think about it at all.

I have a good relationship with my Dad but not a great one. Within the last few years we have had several of the conversations that happen in this movie and I can feel his love deeply. The only issue I take with him now is seldomly do I feel understood by my Dad, though I know he tries hard and is getting better. I bear responsibility in being more clear but at times I feel like older Adam, who wants to punch him in the nose and say, "I asked you nicely to understand." Maybe I'm missing something. Regardless, Incredible episode!!! And Alan, I was crying too! ✌

My therapist pulled a Good Will Hunting/Adam Project on me literally 24 hours ago! 😭 Apparently I am not a fuck up.

I really liked the Adam Project and I loved what you guys had to say about it. The only thing I would change is at the end I would have liked to see a scene where the mom talks to Adam and shares that she’s hurting and struggling too. Other than that I thought it was great. Also, I just have to put it out there. I can’t wait for a video on GOTG3!!!

I cried. THANK YOU, because I have had trouble crying for two years now… Since a traumatic break up, and trauma therapy from my own childhood. And since my son is not talking to me.… And I just bought your popcorn and subscribed to thrive market… So at least I’ll be eating healthy snacks, and crying LMAO!!! P.S. you guys are MUCH better than by therapist…but DR RAMANI DURVASALA is also a HUGE help!!! 🔹Her members are where I first discovered you two!!!🔹
