Alan:

Good morning (or evening? Day?) Heroes!

February has come. And with it, the malaise of why-isn’t-winter-over-yet?

What I’m reading!

  • More for Christmas! Megan also got me The Complete Making of Indiana Jones by J.W. Rinzler. He passed away from pancreatic cancer (F*%^ Cancer!) almost 2 years ago, which is a tragedy, because he wrote the most complete Making Of books you can buy. Packed to the brim with behind the scenes photos, and with detailed breakdowns of the production, going back to the Production Reports to list things as they happened, then filling in detail with many exhaustive interviews. Can’t recommend them highly enough. (Star Wars, Indy, Alien and Aliens. Many others.)

What I’m watching!

  • Still watching The Last of Us (HBOMax). It’s still incredible. Everybody (rightly) talks about how incredible and important episode 3 is, but people are sleeping on the fact that the bad episodes of this show so far have been better than just about any television I’ve watched in the last several years. This is going to go down as one of the all-time great shows. I’m gonna try to get Craig Mazin to come on Cinema Therapy to talk about it, but since they just got renewed for S2, I don’t know when that will be possible.
  • Shrinking (Apple TV+) is also very good. I’ve been planning to binge Ted Lasso again with Jono when S3 comes out. (We’ll likely do several episodes on it.) But we’re also almost certainly going to talk about Shrinking a lot on the channel. It’s just sooooo good.
  • We watched Luck (Apple TV+) as a family the other night, and my kids absolutely adored it. Megan and I were more lukewarm on it. The concept for the story was really great, and the design of the world was stellar! Seriously, top-notch. But the actual storytelling was oddly paced and unsatisfying. The voice performances were mediocre to bad, but by far the most disappointing part for me was that the performance by Simon Pegg, one of my acting heroes, was just… meh. And he was possibly the best performance in the whole show. Luck felt like a missed opportunity, but again, my kids adored it, so there’s that.

What I’m playing!

  • So… I’m only slightly-more-than-a-decade behind: I’m playing Skyrim. And guess what? It’s good. Like, really really good. And big. I can’t imagine the amount of writing, design, level-building, and voice recording that went into a game that size. Just makes me itchy to think about it. Anyway, I’m playing a Nord (of course) basically a Paladin. Two-handed weapons, heavy armor, Destruction and Restoration. Also trying to level my speechcraft, lock-picking and thieving. So a Paladin/Rogue?

And…

Watch Movies! (And television, and read books, and play video games)

Jono:

What's up, Heroes? This month I've been reading Real Love and Post-Childhood Stress Disorder by Dr. Greg Baer. PCSD is not a formal diagnosis; it's a construct used to describe the results of shaming, distant behaviors and relationships of caregivers towards children. It's a healing, nonjudgmental, insightful book and I'm enjoying it very much.

As for what I'm watching, I'm very psyched to check out Creed III next week. I've been getting absorbed in Bridgerton; I'm way late to the party on that one, but I find it to be intelligent, passionate, and sweet. I find its portrayal of family and marriage to be simultaneously progressive and old-fashioned in a compelling way. I'm also watching Agent Carter WAY after the fact but I'm really digging its 1940s vibe and production design, along with Hayley Atwell being a delight.

What have you been watching and reading this month?

Loving The Last of Is (both show and game, which I’m playing. Finally not too scared to play in the dark. Yay!). Shrinking: each episode is still good. Alan: Luck is on my Watch List. Really impressed with the stuff Apple is putting out. CANNOT WAIT FOR TED LASSO

I'm watching "The Last of Us" as well. It's an excellent adaptation of the video game! Reading-wise, I'm finishing up "Dawnshard" by Brandon Sanderson and then I'm going to start reading "The Lost Metal" by (once again) Brandon Sanderson. He's definitely become my favorite fantasy/sci-fi author, right after Tolkien of course. I've been playing "Hogwarts Legacy" and have enjoyed exploring the school and the grounds.

I’ve been watching The Last of Us and the Scream series from MTV. Thought it would be fun to watch before diving into the movies again before 6 in a couple weeks. As for games, I’ve been playing a lot of Overwatch, Hogwarts Legacy and The Quarry hoping to mop up the few trophies I have before platinum. Lately I’ve been part of a book club and we just finished Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I didn’t enjoy listening to the audiobook for some reason, just didn’t work for me, maybe I’ll like the movie. The other book I’ve been reading is The Filmmaker’s Handbook 5th Edition, hoping to learn more about how movies are made!

Yes, do episodes about Ted Lasso!!! (Ugh, Nate!) Shrinking is high on my list, as is Severance, but haven’t gotten there yet.

Oh! Forgot to mention, did you know that Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso writer/actor, co-creator/producer/writer of Shrinking) has a podcast all about films? It’s called Films To Be Buried With. He has guests on, tells them that they’ve died, and asks them to talk about their lives through the films that meant to most to them. It’s my favorite thing. Some guests go really deep and I love it!

I never actually finished Agent Carter, but I have been thinking about it for a few weeks. I’m currently rewatching Supergirl. (Martian Manhunter is my favorite character.)

I've mostly been watching The Last of Us. I'd be curious to know which episodes Alan consider as the bad episodes because I've enjoyed most of them, especially #5. I'm also behind on Marvel shows and have never seen Agent Carter. Maybe it's time to do that. And also try out Apple TV+ because Shrinking, Luck, and Ted Lasso all seem great among others I've been recommended.

Watching: Demon Slayer - just finished season two in anticipation for season three to come out in March!! The Last of Us - waiting is the hardest part for me because I just want to binge watch this! It's so good. We're Here - I think this show is incredibly uplifting and emotional. It's about three drag queens going from small town, to small town, finding allies and people in the LGBTQIA+ community to perform in a drag show. There is not a single episode I don't cry like Alan for every Disney movie. If you're watching The Last of Us, you will be able to watch We're Here because it's on HBO Max. Reading: The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle: I just started it, but already I have ideas for the Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging group I lead at work. It's on Audible and the narrator is easy to listen to. Black-Eyed Susan: A Novel of Suspense by Julia Heaberlin: this is the fourth book I've read by this author. She is incredibly talented and keeps me at the edge of my seat. It's also on Audible and the narrator is very calming.

I started rereading percy jackson in anticipation of the TV series. It's as fun as I remember, and it's fun in the way that proves you don't need stellar story telling skills to hit it with readers. I'm also working through The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. Intriguing stuff, but I feel he could've afforded streamlining his prose. Still excellent. And I watched Ant Mand and the Wasp: Quantumania this weekend. Extremely nerdy movie in all the best ways.

CinemaTherapy

I recently watched Scream (2022), and while I'm not typically a huge fan of slasher movies, thought it was fun with some good characters and performances. - Alan

Hope you’ve seen the rest of them! Would be weird to just watch that one

The third season of Animaniacs came out on Hulu so been watching that. My Hero Academia is still going. Harley Quinn had a Valentine special, all about listening to what the other partner wants. Last Week Tonight's new season started last Sunday... Uhmm, planning to watch Cocaine Bear. On my to watch list is The Last of Us and The Bear. Taking forever to read The Book of Dust, I have a lot of other books on to read list. I've been 'reading' Coraline via audio book as well.

Bought a subscription to hulu for the last of us and have been binging their IPs since it started. Search Party is probably my alltime favorite though (besides tlou, of course). It's crazy how the show jumps the shark every season and remains hilarious and enjoyable. It ends in the most unexpected and ridiculous way, but it was so thematically appropriate for a group of entitled kids who literally can't take responsibility for anything they ever do wrong. I also agree that tlou has been better tv than anything I've seen in... years?

FOR SKYRIM! AND THE GLORY OF THE EMPIRE! Brother! Oooooh I can’t wait to hear more of you adventures in the great province of Skyrim, Alan. I myself and playing through it (once more/again), and I also usually (if not exclusively) play Nord too, mostly because geographically and what they’re inspired by is literally what/where I am. That being Scandinavia and the Vikings. 😆

Currently in the midst of binging Daniel Day-Lewis (DDL) films with my parents. So far we’ve watched and loved In The Name of the Father, There Will Be Blood, and Gangs of New York. We’ve also watch The Last of the Mohicans, which - though it featured wonderful acting and cinematography - lacked a bit too much story to make the romantic relationships between the characters feel as well-developed and engrossing as they should have been. Currently reading Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless. It’s really good, and I’m a bit upset I’m gonna have to wait until September for the sequel to be released.

I’m obsessed with the new Puss in Boots movie and hope you guys eventually do a video on the subject. It handles many mature themes that the marketing for the movie doesn’t do justice in such a lighthearted manner. It strikes the perfect balance of funny and serious and made me laugh and cry multiple times the first time I saw it. I’ve watched it many times now with a bunch of different friends and family members and all have enjoyed it, and would recommend it to anyone out there.

Currently watching The Legend of Vox Machina animated series on Amazon Prime. It's soooooo good (though I may be biased as I LOVE Critical Role and have watched their web series every week for years now). If anyone is into tabletop RPGs, you will love it. And even if you aren't into that stuff, it's still really accessible and just good all around! I think each of the characters would be good case studies for various therapy-related topics (Percy and battling your inner demons, Keyleth and living up to expectations, Scanlan looking for love in all the wrong places haha, etc.). But it's not a movie technically, so oh well. It could also be a discussion topic for Alan about making animated series meant for adults, as opposed to assuming all animated stuff is just "cartoons" for kids.

Jono, I'm so glad you're taking your time to soak in all of Bridgerton. I am going to have my eyes glued here on Cinema Therapy or on Mended Light, waiting for any further analyses or breakdowns you might share. I'm also reading Spare, based on my friend's recommendation. I'm not a royal fan (despite loving Bridgerton), so I didn't expect to love it as much as I do! His pathway through denying and later processing his grief are exceptional. It's worth a read!

I can't wait! Now I need to start a campaign to get Alan to watch, too, so it's on both channels! :-D

I have been engrossed in the Witcher series (books) I am on 7of 8. Just picked up Atomic Heart which is fun and giving me some uncanny valley spooks. I havent watched too many movies but we did watch Game Night with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams which is super silly and funny.

I've been primarily been watching The Last of Us as well, but got behind by a couple of episodes because I discovered a show that's getting ready to leave Hulu called Being Erica. It's a great show about this girl who goes to therapy and also deals with some time travel. I finished the series and am sad because there is no more. It has great nuggets of wisdom in each episode and was such a great discovery. Definitely check it out before it leaves if you get the chance (some gracious soul even uploaded the whole series on YouTube). I am also reading The Power to Change by Craig Groeschel. I haven't gotten very far in it, but I am really enjoying it. Same story for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I am liking it to but, once again, I'm not very far (curse of being a slow reader) and a lot of it is just set up. That's what I've been up to.

I think Rick Riordan actually has some pretty epic storytelling skills, but I think I understand what you mean. :) Have you read his other mythology series? Or any of his adult fiction?

Anonymous

I’ve read all the mythology series. Heroes of Olympus is my favorite and I absolutely think he’s a master at plot twists and character backstory ☺️

It's never too late to try Skyrim

Anonymous

Might not be the right place for it, but you guys started branching out into limited series. One of the best amines of all time only 13 episodes is called Angel Beats and you will cry at the end. Not sad, just real about life.
