What's it like walking in someone else's shoes? (Literally?) What can you learn from different perspectives and life experiences?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright take a look at Your Name and how it explores some of these themes. They talk about the importance of perspective taking, the unique sci-fi style twist to that concept in this movie, and how these characters learn from each other and discover new ways of thinking and doing things. They talk about how much Alan absolutely loves this movie - from the gorgeous anime art style, to the script, to the perfect balance between fun, serious, and heartfelt in the story.

BELLE 2021 - Mamoru Hosoda. Please please pleeeeeease

Gabriel Mendez

I guess I'm a bit late to this party seeing as this was uploaded last year but I'd like to say I'm very happy with my membership purchase knowing I was able to watch the directors cut of this episode. So a million thank yous for reacting to and living probably my favorite movie anime or otherwise. Lastly a lot of the anime recommendations here seem great and while I love all of them, I would love to offer a movie and a series. The first is The Boy and the Beast from Mamoru Hosoda about an unlikely adoptive father and son adoptive relationship that deals with loss separation jealousy anger and family and friends. The second would be one of my favorite pieces of media, a 12 episode series on Netflix called Violet Evergarden. It can be confusing because there's 3 additional movies tied to the series but I wholly believe as a western viewer the original 12 episodes offer a tight, complete story in about 4 hours about a young orphaned girl from a war torn country who is raised an emotionless weapon and used by a military officer who cares for her. The story follows her life after the war and her having to cope and help others cope with the aftermaths of war through breathtaking visuals, music, and shortstories. Beautifully well made and covers suck a wide range of emotions experienced by Violet and those she helps as every interaction makes her more caring and more aware of her part in the taking of lives during the war. I highly suggest and hope you give either of these a look and thanks for being my YouTube dad's!

Emily Stock

Yes, I second this! I think Violet Evergarden is perfect for the channel. It not only has beautiful animation but there is so much character growth and emotions that you feel in the 12 eps. If Cinema Therapy ever branches into TV, I think Violet Evergarden would be a great one to cover.

I loved this, as Your Name is my favorite anime movie. I love it when you react to characters' psychology in films. I think you would enjoy Howl's Moving Castle as it features main characters that struggle with their personal growth. Wolf Children is also excellent in its storytelling of a single mother raising two (wolf) children and the children growing and feeling comfortable with themselves. Thanks and keep up the amazing work!

One of my absolute favorite anime movies is Wolf Children. I would love to see y'all's reactions to that one.

2023-06-12 11:54:43 I am also pretty late to this video as I just subbed to your Patreon (because it is fantastic and wonderful and you mention Rifftrax). I will include my recommendations below. I tend to really stray from overly sensationalized things when it comes to movies, so hopefully I can provide some different (and hopefully as good as the ones already suggested) options when it comes to Anime movies. 1. Utena the Movie, this is a very... "weird" movie, but it tells a beautiful story of love and touches on some very emotional topics. Would love to hear your opinions on it! <3 2. Perfect Blue is iconic but it is also touches on abuse and other very hard topics. Again, another I would love to hear your thoughts on! 3. Lastly I leave Garden of Words, which is another of Makoto Shinkai's works. It delves into isolation and alienation from society. As an introvert this movie really resonated with me and I most certainly think everyone should watch it. OK, and this is a series and then several movies... and remakes... but I want to know your views on Neon Genesis Evangelion. It is incredibly iconic and definitely popular and here I am with unpopular opinions about it. Thus my curiosity!

I don’t know if anyone has suggested this yet, but the director of Kimi no Na wa has a new movie out! Suzume no Tojimari came out in March and I don’t think it’s available to stream yet but once it is, I’m sure you guys will love it! 😊

New subscriber working my way through a lot of your videos. Really enjoy the points you make and your take on these movies. I see a couple other suggestions of Studio Ghibli films, but my favorite was always Princess Mononoke. A bit dark, but the conflict in the film and the open ended resolution I've always found to be fantastic. Might not fit the themes you usually work for, but think there could be a lot of good parts you could take out of it.

CinemaTherapy

Hi! We're slowly working our way through the Studio Ghibli catalog, so we will hopefully get to it at some point. :)

New patreon here and, honestly, this video is what hooked me into Cinema Therapy so had to come here to watch the Director's Cut. I'm sure it's been mentioned in other comments, but wanted to add another vote for "Suzume no Tojimari". Saw it in theaters last year and it's another of my favorite films from this director. It comes to disc on March 12th.

Bryan Hughes

I'm definitely late watching this video, but it had already been ages since I'd seen Your Name and wanted to rewatch the film before watching your episode. So glad I rewatched it too and that y'all also loved it. Mostly though, I wanted to hop in to say OMG you referenced Video Game High School!! This just might be the first time I've seen a reference to VGHS in the wild, and I also adore that series but thought no one else ever saw. Made my day even better!

I do have a recommendation for an anime, it's a series but a short one (only 12 episodes, watching the sequel isn't necessary). It's called 'Love, Chuunibyou, & other Delusions' and it was made by Kyoto Animation -- one of the best anime studios and the unfortunate victim of the arson attack in 2019. The funniest part about this recommendation is that I'm just as surprised in recommending it to you, because when I started it, I really was expecting a fluff piece where anime characters are being cute and nothing else. Little did I know it would tear my heart and give me a revelation on the same level as 'Inside Out' did for many. If you want a short synopsis, it's about a teenage boy who moved to a new school where no one knew who he was, because he was embarrassed at his past when he had a wild imagination and believed he was possessed of dark powers. But then he meets a girl who not only acted as cringey as he did back then, but also knew who he was. It's a story about self-awareness, loving and respecting yourself, and how different people deal with traumatic experiences differently.

Anna Maria Gouw

I have watched Your Name at least seven times since it came out and I always weep at the end. Right when I started tearing up watching these, when they're both on the stairs, you guys were also both crying, lol. I watch anime movies regularly and my recommendations would be: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, A Silent Voice (you've seen this already), Garden of Words (a short movie), Mary and the Witch's Flower, and Belle (2021). Also Ghibli movies are really amazing, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Tororo for obvious reasons, and I loved Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service.

Michael Emerson

One word: Miyazaki. My favorite of his films being Spirited Away.

CinemaTherapy

We LOVE Ghibli films! (We're working on a Spirited Away episode right now, in fact.) We've heard really good things about Belle - might have to check that one out.

So many good Anime movies. recommendations: Bubble; Whisker Away; Weathering with you; Drifting Home; A Silent Voice. But i would love to see you guys do an episose on The Boy and the Beast. Would love a therapy take on what healthy male role models should look like.

My favorite Studio Ghibli film is Howl's Moving Castle.

Deborah Olsen

It may not be anime but I’d recommend “A werewolf boy” it’s a 2012 Korean Romance movie. I’d be curious about y’all’s take on a sort of reverse “sexy born yesterday”. Also curious if their relationship is healthy or not ^^;

Sean Goettsche

I’m in my late 20s and have kinda been the same way with anime for most of my life. I always saw as nerd stuff (to which I feel a little hypocritical about 😅). But I haven’t been too invested with all the new pop-culture stuff coming out so I’m giving anime a better chance than I’ve originally given it. So far, they know how to hit all the right emotions, even for characters who have the least impact to the story. And I love it!!!

Lara

The power of film making and you two: I haven't even watched the movie and I'm crying (also, I too would totally love to see you two react to Howl's Moving Castle, just like Shawna Keyes suggested!)

Here are some of my recommended anime for you guys, Over all well crafted emotional stories with great cinematics: - Weathering With You - The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - The Boy and the Beast - Your Name - A Silent Voice Iconic to film history: - Akira - Ghost in the Shell - Spirited Away Anime Series ( These are shorter series with fantastic plots, and in general, a more serious story arc ) - Erased - Steins Gate - Death Note Honorable Mention: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood ( Because it is top tier )

Daniel

Thanks for covering this movie it's my favorite and I'm so glad you guys liked it! Definitely check out Weathering With You it's by the same director and his film after this one.

I hate to as, but is this really a Director's Cut? It seems shorter or the same as the YouTube version.

I have this question as well , it seems like this is the same episode that is on the youtube channel , but without the sponsorship moments

Hey guys! I want to recommend you guys watch an anime film called "Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms". The premise is heart-wrenching and beautiful: It's about an immortal girl who takes on a mortal human boy as her adopted son. It deals with what it means to be a parent, love, and loss! It's probably my favorite film of all time and it had me ugly crying at the end haha. It's a relatively lesser known film that flew under the radar but deserves all the attention in the world! Much better than Your Name, in my opinion (and Your Name is amazing!).

This anime is on my top list with a silent voice and you bring insight that I didn't thought of when watching the movie. If you want to explore more anime, one I would recommend that I don't see recommended yet would be "In this corner of the world". It is dark as it happens during world war two next to Hiroshima but very interesting and well crafted.

I would love to see your (and your wife's) reaction to "Wolf children" it's a good movie about parenting with a lot of things I think you can comment about. It really hit me and my mother hard (Jonathan, please have a box of tissues near if you see this movie).

We did an episode on A Silent Voice about a year ago! And we're working on a Spirited Away episode right now. 😊

I saw this movie when it was in the cinemas here in the UK and I instantly fell in love with it -- the art, the storyline, the characters, the feels. All of it is so beautiful.

taylor garrett

love this movie, I remember seeing the poster all over here in japan not being able to read it, then one Amazon said you might like this, and I bought it no questions.

KingCarna

This was my favorite stand alone anime film until “A Silent Voice” came out.

Bit late to the draw on this one but I strongly recommend "Belle" directed by Mamoru Hosoda.

I'm very late to the party but one animated movie that's just a feast for the eyes is Summer Wars -- came out in 2010 and has everything you could ask for in a Japanese movie: fake relationships, family issues, a very strange online community called Oz that might harken the literal end of the world. I mean really, what more could you ask for? The English Dub is quite good as well!
