Would any of these Disney couples actually live happily ever after?

Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright dive back into the world of Disney animation for round two of ranking Disney romances! They're taking a look at 5 more classic Disney couples to see what's good, what's bad, and what's ugly. This time we've got The Aristocats (Duchess and O'Malley), Hercules (Hercules and Meg), Mulan (Mulan and Shang), The Princess and the Frog (Tiana and Naveen), and Tarzan (Tarzan and Jane) to see which couples might be headed for tough times ahead, and which seem to be on pretty good footing to get to happily ever after. From lying about their identity or goals, to facing preconceived notions about people or life, to literally dying, there's some pretty big hurdles for some of these couples to overcome.

Years of Latin and Classical Greek classes in high school both ruined and opened up more of Hercules for me. Like, Hercules and Meg do end up together, but he loses his temper and kills her and their kids and gets with another woman. This happens four or five times. And he's actually a demi-god because Zeus had lots of affairs with mortal women, so his dad is a god and his mom is a human. So much of what is in the movie can be really cool to see/hear because of its reality within mythology. Watching the classic villains he fought animated. The nerd in me is really only bugged by the fact that his name is actually Heracles. This whole movie is based in Greek mythology, but the main character's name is from Roman mythology. Roman mythology has all the gods having the same names as the planets, i.e. Zeus is now Jupiter, Ares is Mars, Aphrodite is Venus, etc etc. ...is this OCD or I feel like this might be an annoyance to anyone else who knows all about the topic too!

If you ever do another one of these, PLEASE make it about Nani + David (Lilo + Stich), Linguini + Collette (Ratatouille), Max + Roxanne (Goofy Movie), Anna + Kristoff (Frozen 1 + 2), and Mr. + Mrs. Incredible (Incredibles)! Id love to see that! I have my own ranking too 1. Nani + David 2. Anna + Kristoff 3. Max + Roxanne 4. Mr. + Mrs. Incredible 5. Linguini + Collette

As a bisexual, I do take sliiiiiiight issue with the notion that Shang isn't at all into Mulan when he thinks she's Ping. Shang is our bicon, yo. BD Wong even said he was fluid!

I don’t know if you two have read the original story of Tarzan but I loooove it’s ending way more than the movie. Tarzan in the books longs to be a man and to find out what it means to be a man. Jane leaves because she wants her life back in London. Tarzan ends up following years later after he learns to speak (not from Jane -gasp-) and approaches her like a normal human being asking for a courtship. :) if y’all haven’t read Edgar Rice Boroughs Tarzan. I recommend it ^^ ((It’d be interesting to hear Jono’s take on book Tarzan and masculinity too! Though I know it’s literature and not cinema))

Completely agree! I am also bi and Mulan is all about the bi-energy!

2023-06-12 11:56:24 If there's another one of these (which there totally should be, they're such great fun!) I'd be curious to see these relationships: Anna & Kristoff (Frozen), Belle & the Beast (in opposition to Gaston & Belle), Cinderella & Prince (2015, live action version maybe? because they actually have a relationship in that film...), Peter Pan & Wendy, Robin Hood & Maid Marian. 👏👏👍👍😊😊

We’re gonna keep making these until AFTER people stop watching them. Too fun to make. LOTS of prep work though (many movies per video…) We’ve got a couple twists on the formula coming over the next few months too, stay tuned! Wait. Nobody “tunes in” anymore. That was like, radio… Stay… subscribed? I don’t know what the internet equivalent would be.

I can see that! In Old China, they were generally more tolerant of bi/homosexual behaviour than Christian dominated Europe (at least of the men - provided they fulfilled their social commitments to family), so it's not too much of stretch to hypothesise Shang might have been treading along the more ambiguous tiers of the Kinsey scale or even be bisexual/pan/fluid. It's Mulan/Ping's actions and personal qualities that forged a bond between them, not her gender. It could certainly make some interesting fiction if properly explored. That context can make the queer reading make sense and let's be real, the song "Reflection" has resonated with tons of different aspects in the modern age like social media, authentic vs performative self and the queer community because of the lyrics that resonate with confections with gender identity, norms and sexuality. Sorry again, every time It a long response LOL, any reading of a film can occur.

I don't know exactly how, but I would love to see you guys react to the movie Ever After in some way. Maybe couples therapy????? I just love the movie as a person and as an aspiring filmmaker and I'd love to see hear what Alan has to say about the filmmaking!! It seems pretty great to me!!

I loved this! Another couple I think y’all should do if there’s ever a part three, even though they’re not the main point of the movie, is Félix and Pepa from Encanto. Like they are, to me, the healthiest Disney couple like ever even though we only see them for like 6 or 7 minutes
