This is a song I wrote while pulling a late night in the drafting loft in college, finishing a hand drawn plot for Stagecraft. Must have been nearing winter 2014 or so. I got a very expensive parking ticket that night, sometime between the hours of midnight and 3am. Stress and overwhelm can have a funny way of pulling art out of you.

The recording was taken at a rehearsal on November 10th, 2016 with Josh Vann on cello, Adam Hall on drums, and Luke Soren Nielsen on Trumpet. We performed under several different pseudonyms, but the only one I remember anymore is Deuce Deuce and the Booty Sleuths. Lyrics follow.

In Their Eyes (lai dai song)

why am I always the last one

to hear the news?

didn't your mother teach you

that words can bruise

but the absence of words

doesn't make it a truth

it's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie

just because we don't fight

doesn't mean that we try

it's a lie, it's a lie, it's a lie

Lai dai dai dai dai dai dai dai dai x2

haven't you ever looked back

on your abuse

you might see everyone else is

confused like you

if the people are talking

it means that they're mocking you

lies, and it's lies, and it's lies

but the absence of love

doesn't mean that it's hate

in their eyes, in their eyes, in their eyes

in their eyes, dai dai dai dai dai dai x2

dai dai dai

I will wait for you to arrive

somewhere that you can survive

I know it's hard to become

something you thought you were running from

lai dai dai dai dai dai

lai dai dai dai dai dai dai dai dai...

I love the instrumentation, but find myself wishing for a different balance in the mix bringing the vocals forward. But I really really love the lightheartedness of the lie lie lie daí chorus. It’s very powerful, like Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah, you will never touch me with these lies kind of feel.

More vocal is a good call. I tried to load these files into audacity to manipulate the compression to see if I could pop my voice out over the top a little more, but the iphone voice memo file format is incompatible with my open source editing software. x_x I'm excited to use my new zoom recorder to potentially multitrack and polish rehearsal recordings in the future. Maybe put together a rough and dirty ep-worthy handful of songs.
