1:10 : you can simply dip the sodium in a small beaker of hexane, give it a little shake, and let it air-dry for a few seconds to get rid of any mineral oil that might contaminate your experiment. 2:46 : Are you sure? As far as I've been told, sodium is pretty terrible at removing oxygen from solvents. I've always ended up freeze-pumping all my solvents before doing air-sensitive chemistry.

Your quite right and i do that all the time. In this case it wasn't necessary since the mineral oil would be left behind anyway during distillation. hexane washing would have been an extra step. If i were using the solvent without distillation, then mineral oil contamination would indeed be a greater issue and hexane washing would be necessary.
