Lab Notes July 24th - Optimizing sodium, making HBr, and The Clevenger

My lab notes for this month so far. Basically, i've been optimizing sodium production. So far i can get it up to 60-70% yield just with cleaner techniques. I've been making more hydrobromic acid and have and improved method of making it using sulfuric acid, and purifying it using sulfur or sodium metabisulfite. i've also have a new piece of lab equipment called the clevenger apparatus.

I do like the periodic lab notes videos. It is a good format to allow us to be informed on what's going on. One more thing that is good about this type of video is it also gives us an insight on what you thoughts are while working on an active project like this, and allows you to pass on changes you have made while trying to optimize the processes. This can help other amateur chemists out, and hopefully cut down on people asking you to try things you already have tried.

i like combined, and support doing an updated video

I like the combined also, and from them, I (we) can say; yes make an updated HBr methods video.

I like both ideas. However, if time is an issue, then the combine format.

I liked this video, and to answer your questions, I've some details. I think the combined video format works fine because the added topics added very little time and were interesting. I'd argue anything past about 4-5 mins per topic really probably should have its own video. At the same time, I agree - I'd also would love to see (and would support) an updated HBr video. I think documenting improvements in video with the full procedure is well worth the time and Patreon money.

I will always say yes to new/updated videos :)
