Now that it's been adapted into a television series, I figured this was my chance to discover what all the hype was about! Having watched it... I'm still not sure. I'm sure it's a great game, but this series feels a bit too similar to other movies, shows, and even games that I kiiinda liked more. Station Eleven, anyone?! That said, one episode in particular absolutely destroyed me. You may or may not be able to guess which. Plot (via Wiki): Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set in 2023, twenty years into a pandemic caused by a mass fungal infection, which forces its hosts to transform into zombie-like creatures and collapses society. The series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. Guest stars include Nico Parker as Joel's daughter Sarah, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, Anna Torv as Joel's partner Tess, Lamar Johnson and Keivonn Montreal Woodard as brothers Henry and Sam, and Melanie Lynskey and Jeffrey Pierce as resistance leader Kathleen and her second-in-command Perry. #thelastofus #uhoh

i think you are supposed to really connect with sam and henry even more than ellie and joel at that point, because then losing them is that much harder. plus they are more relatable and emotionally open: desperate, frantic, naive, guilty, scared, loving. part of joel’s whole thing is that he doesn’t open up to anyone and is a selfish person (especially when it comes to love), and ellie is a teen who (like most teens) can often be grating or annoying early on. and though that’s very much an intentional choice, i can still understand why ellie and joel’s dynamic in the early episodes can seem too dry/boring for some viewers. their development is slow and purposeful, and the duo often serve more as a conduit for the story, so it can organically come across the many interesting people and events in their path, rather than joel and ellie being “interesting” in their own right. and they ARE interesting imo, but I think a lot of the interesting aspects about them are shown a lot more explicitly later in the season, once a lot of time has passed and they have developed due to the challenges on their path.

OMG I also loved Sam and Henry and had not played the games when I watched the show and I had a similar reaction as you. Except I love Joel and Ellie lol

Weird thing is that in the games, Ellie is much less aggressive and more like a normal 14 year old. She still has an edge to her considering she was born into all of this shit, but she isn't unbearable. I think you would have liked Ellie from the games a lot more lol. As someone who played both games, I didn't really like her in the series until the 4th episode tbh.

I absolutely adored every aspect of this show, imo it’s the best new show Ive seen since True Detective (season one lol), but I totally respect your opinion and hope people aren’t mean to you because you don’t feel the way they do. Good luck out there in this cesspool we call the internet🖤🖤🖤

Idk if it’s just me but it’s brutal watching Eric cry 😂. I’m such a softie so I can empathize

i feel like the main drive behind all the hype is that people are just so happy to see a tv adaptation of a videogame actually be done right and with love! but I also really get your side of it too! if i hadn't played and adored the game for years before the show i easily would have felt it was just another overdone apocalypse trope show :) hoping other people get that side to and don't take it on you harshly!
