I would recommend watching the show first and then listening to it with the commentary. That's what I did and it seems to be working out well.

Fun little diddle... Jay Asher originally toyed with the idea of Hannah actually being alive in the end. Like her parents got to her in time but she was in the hospital or something so the tapes got around anyway while she was recovering or something like that but it wouldn't have been revealed until the end that she was actually alive. But then he ultimately decided "Fuck Hannah". True story.
