This fatalism somehow draws me a parallel between HKers and Doraemon. It links the doctrine of “bad money drives out good” to HK’s hideous future under the already repressive NSL and the upcoming, even more draconian Article 23. The talent and vision of HKers had helped position their hometown as a powerful springboard, turbocharging a big, poor country by combining their professional management skills with western capital and technology. As a result, this brought opportunities and prosperity to many sectors. Yet due to a cruel twist of “scorpion-frog” fate, none of them can now decide their own future in this once miracle city. Many decide to run away from the very challenging circumstances. The fate of those who remain in this cage is then determined by a basket of “loyal waste.” These disposable individuals know nothing about how to do good things for HK. Instead, they’ve power to do anything undermining this city. For their own sakes, they home in on setting out plans to further tighten the noose around free speech, freedom from fear, and various aspect of our lives. Even more alarming is the apparent absence of checks and balances on their power. Regrettably, in reality, we lack the presence of a lazy but caring Nobita and instead find ourselves subject to the whims of the “Chairman of Everything” who tirelessly pursues his credo: the great rejuvenation of his nation, a euphemism for “the CCP, lasting forever!”
