I thought it was interesting, his whole reasoning for making an undead army, because he got crushed by someone when he was a rookie pirate and all his nakama were killed, prompting him to make it his business to weed out scrubs trying to get to the other side of the Grand Line. And yeah, Moria's VA was turned up to 11 when he goes Shadows Asgard on us, while we see that shot of Red Eyes in the sky. That's an homage to Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula.
