the mysteries of Devil fruits deepen... 🤔🤔🤔.

MrBulldog714

New OP starts at 116. Can watch at or past episode 131. Still can't believe Toei did this. Guess fatigue on OP #2 was really setting in.

KAROO Karoo is one of our friends now, even if he's not a crewmate yet. The title of the episode is "Fierce Captain Karoo". This time, it's not just Oda being cruel to animals to avoid being cruel to humans like with Best Vulture and Otter, the Unluckies. This time it's Oda trying to show us just how much spirit Karoo has. We're facing a warlord's crew now. We already have our matchups - Sanji/Mr 2, Zoro/Mr 1, and Usopp/Chopper are already getting beat up to help Vivi. This is Karoo going ham. That's why I think they flashed back to all the moments with Karooo and the crew first. MR 2 Apart from the fact that we met Mr 2 on the ship, I think there is also another reason he is more likeable. If you watch Crocodile, Mr 1 and all the other baroque works members, they are all saying stuff like "Friendships and Trust doesn't matter". And it's always a recurring theme. Especially Mr 1, everytime we see him, he's just like "the mission", fuck everything and everyone else. But Mr. 2 meets us for a short time and he has a good time with us "Friendship isn't based on how much time you've known each other." And you can see he enjoyed it. He even has his own little crew that he dances with and he is close to. It's worth noting too, that the first time we see Mr 1, he cut down some of Mr 2's men and he was ready to gut Mr. 1 for it. He cares about his crewmates. Even though he is a shit person and not particularly as cool-looking as Ace/Smoker, his gimmicks and idiosyncracies end up being so much more likeable than the rest, because in his way, he embodies the very theme of the arc so far. The bond between all of us, our friendships. Something Luffy and the crew have been banging in Vivi's head. THE CHRISTMAS NAME Getting heavy or light also doesn't have anything to do with Valentine's day Changing people's emotions isn't related to Goldenweek It's just the baroque works officer agent naming scheme Males - Numbers Females - Days (or Holidays) With the Exception of Mr 2, who doesn't have a partner because he's queer. I think Christmas just stands out and Miss Merry Christmas is too quirky so it feels like her name should have meaning.

It’s a typical way of examining one piece really that’s quite standard for OP material today. If you look at any of the last recent 4-5 arcs, you can see lots of fans deep dive analysis of oda’s material especially since we follow it weekly, we have lots of time to recollect and keep theorizing every week for each new chapter. But I think its core fandom and audience that watched THESE episodes probably didn't have that sort of perspective on the show in the early 2000's, most likely because our generation was young. We were just kids watching this show and there is even a sizable portion of the audience that only watched OP as it became popular in america, which 4kids kind of destroyed it for anyone so you can say alot of fans were binge watchers as opposed to weekly watchers in these early episodes. So I think there is something to say about OG fans, people like myself that has been with OP for 20+ years now, probably are just kind of taken back or shocked at the way you guys are analyzing the material be it pointing out the flaws or understanding the methodology behind oda’s writing style. It’s kind of ironic because a lot of fans today criticize and even point out inherent flaws in current arcs of OP but yet the community has more of an acceptance to it were as these early stories were looked at as just masterpieces because we just watched it for the entertainment and didn’t look at anything beyond that. So seeing your exploration and analysis on oda’s writing on almost a quantitative level, is quite the eye opener for a lot of us old time fans.

The word "Friend" actually gets way overused in the translation, but in the OG manga. The word Nakama has various different meanings and I really wish translators can translate the context of the term instead of replacing it with the English word "friend" for every single instance. This is the difference between the fan subs and official subs, they didn't make that mistake. For example, In Japan, the word “nakama” is used in different situations to express some kind of relationship or partnership. In military, the word Comrade is used to indicate that you have a close relationship to a member in your ranks. In roleplaying games, the word nakama usually refers to a "party" or group of people who fight together. In the Edo period, there were trade associations called Kabunakama that gave rise to the current meaning of nakama. If you used the word "Friend" in these instances, would it be appropriate? in these examples. This is why there is so many bizare points in one piece anime series where the word friend seems a bit out of place.

Trout

all endings are fine to watch btw

ChocoBoshi

Oda is definitely very worldly

I was talking a little bit about it in the discord the other day but to restate it here. One of the reasons I watch react content at all is to see how a piece of media that affected me in a certain way affects other people. Sometimes I enjoy seeing someone have the same reaction as me (crying at the sad parts or laughing at the funny parts), sometimes I enjoy seeing a new perspective. Something I think you guys have that is special is that you not only think about the story at its face value, you go a bit deeper than that and you try to figure out how someone could go about making something like One Piece. When I first started One Piece I only really thought about media in general on a surface level, I was pretty young and wasn't really into thinking too hard about the things I liked, I just wanted to enjoy them. Through One Piece however, I started to develop an enjoyment for thinking of things holistically and examining things at length. To me its the best of both worlds when you guys can simultaneously be on the edge of your seat worrying about the possible death of a Duck that Oda left frozen in a river for the entirety of the last arc (I say this partly as a joke but also because Oda is really good at making you care about characters that you either haven't known for long or who haven't been a major player in the story for a while) while also wanting to talk at length about world building concepts that you aren't even fully sure Oda had worked out at this point in the story's development.

EOussama

Karoo can't catch a break, my God!!! Lindsay really nails the point of Mr. 2 as a very weird but very entertaining character that you find yourself almost rooting for him sometimes lmao. For a fight that doesn't look as important as it actually is, Usopp's fight dropped one of the biggest facts about devil fruits out of nowhere, and by none other than Miss Merry Chrismas. I guess that is why she's the Christmas woman. About the types of devil fruits even within the same category, for example, Zoan fruit, Dalton had the Ox-Ox Fruit, Bison Model, and Lasso the dog has the Dachshund model of the Dog Dog fruit. The wording thing you brought up is also very real, Oda loves his wordplay and numerology, not just using Japanese and English words but with other languages too, although, if you keep dwelling on it for too long you'll find yourself in Math Piece, a very uncharted area where headcanon and canon become too blurry to tell apart. "Why are you spending so much time talking about this", no please do, it's the back and forth and pointing out all the faint hints and one-liners from multiple episodes ago (sometimes hundreds) that sparks some of the best fan theories. Keep cooking guys.

klairvoyance

As someone who has prolly watched as many One Piece analysis and/or theory videos on yt as One Piece has episodes (prolly more atp lol), I fully agree

100Rainy

Sucks that you guys gotta defend yourselves so often, fwiw your approach to experiencing one piece so far is pretty refreshing. There's been plenty who've analyzed this story critically, but I haven't seen many others who have been as determined to understand Oda's headspace and writing process as much as you two. And from what I've seen, you guys have always been tough but fair on any criticisms you've expressed. Your discussions and examinations of every facet of this story so far, positive or otherwise, already show me that you guys are genuinely wanting to immerse yourselves in this world Oda is building. So honestly, keep doing you. I wouldn't have it any other way.

SomeoneElse

A couple of the fights here are not great but they don't go for long thankfully. Personally I am keen to get past them lol. Oda is a weirdo deep down but he does eventually grow out of these super random fights 😅 Also I would say, regarding animal cruelty, I think it only hits as hard as it does here because Oda cares about them. He makes them important characters that you fall in love with. The fact that a character like Karoo is trying so hard to help Vivi even tho it's an animal that probably doesn't understand everything makes it even more powerful. Karoo just cares so much for Vivi that it would risk it's life for her. Karoo isn't just animal points like in a game where you can press E to pet some random dog, he's a real character in this arc with just as much going for him as any other. Captain Karoo 💪 At least.. For the animals that don't attack us. If an animal attacks the crew, they're asking for trouble 💀 is that Oda's fault........................... Sometimes he says the characters write themselves SO Great reactions as always. All I want is moore

Wyse Ebbah

To be fair, when Luffy especially particularly uses the word nakama, he actually means friend, not crewmate even when the context doesn't require. Even with people outside the crew. The **spoiler** alliance is an example. But you are absolutely right, they should try to vary the translation by context.

Drakojin

Just wanna say I really appreciate your thoughts and tangents (but kishimoto is still a hack :p)

Whoopsie

mr. 4/fourth player in the batting order is known as the cleanup hitter, also known as the cleanup spot and in modern baseball is almost always one of the best hitters on the team, often the one with the most power

Sonicluis

I just want to say I because a patreon because of the way you guys talk and dissect thing. So be discouraged by a few people with negative comments. I for one love the discussion and that you guys are brave enough to speak your mind on a show with a scary fan base.

Gino

Well, there is the new OP that spoils the entire current arc lmao

Will.Har310

The women agents of Baroque Works are organized like the men with the best day of the year to the worst day of the year. That’s the only reason she’s called Ms. Merry Christmas.

Will.Har310

Are you referring to Usopp and Chopper’s fight? Say what you will about Mr.4 and Ms.Merry Christmas, but this fight gives us one of the best Usopp moments outside of Water 7 and I always look forward to it.

Gino

They are getting better each arc, i personally like most of nami and ussop fights because of how resourceful they can be

Jambron

Sure the new OP spoils a lot of stuff but in a much subtler way. If you know, you know. If you don't you're still having to guess what most of the stuff refers to.

Anonymous

Now that's why i subscribe to patreon! Love the analysis, love the discussion, great work guys, thanks!

David Butt

Yeah, the Ussop and Chopper vs Mr 4 and Miss Merry Christmas is probably my least favorite of the Alabasta fights, but the stuff with Karoo and the Gun eating the Devil Fruit are great. I was wondering if you were planning on watching the new anime based on Oda's one-shot Monster? It came out over the weekend and is Canon to One Piece.

Jambron

Oda's really an incredible storyteller, and there's so much to pick up from his writing. For me, it's a mix of doing my own analysis and also getting into chats about it or hearing others break it down. It's always cool to see someone diving into his work right from the start, especially since you're totally correct in that a large bulk of the theories and analyses online use hindsight or later bits of the story but might focus on the early stuff less (or in a different way). I'm also into Mompiece's stuff for the same reason - she dives deep in her analysis right from the start and it's super interesting. Sure, I love the show, but just watching someone go "wow" or "amazing" isn't enough for me. Still, it's pretty neat to catch that moment when someone realizes the show's got more layers than they first thought. As an animator, these reactions are sometimes handy for facial expressions, but I can get those from other places too. And just from a creative point of view, seeing how people dissect and analyze stuff is way more useful. It gives me new insights into writing and how different folks see and feel about it. It's interesting to see what parts of the story people get straight away, and which parts leave them scratching their heads.

pedro I.S

"its a new technique in the grand line". I always thought this to be so interesting. Humans have the ability to bend and work around nature, but most storys dont bring this idea to the magical aspects of their fictional world. I find the idea of humans messing up even with the magic of the world very realistic.

Kwuagga

the one piece reactions are going so hard rn

Ty

Not really it kind of spoils all the matchups of the arc.

Nicolas LeBlanc

They should probably wait 270 ish episodes before watching it... but yes I will remind them.

Anonymous

Awesome reactions and amazing discussions on this episode! I always love hearing Carsons thoughts on the writing process of one piece which is such a nice change of pace from other reactors who just take what is shown at face value without going into further analysis. Thematic storytelling is so much better appreciated when analyzed!

lionstooth

i love the post discussions and analyzing, alotta ppl that are complaining are coming from a place of already knowing and bias. This is true for alotta anime fans, but they literally make the series about them and their life so any disection, retrospection and analysis is taken weirdly personal to them. I'd honestly just ignore them but obv they're making it hard to do so. Alotta these people also dont seem to understand how reactions work? Its almost they come in and just wanna watch people sit there blankly and watch that's it. Idk they just need to find a hobby or something.

Jambron

I'll agree to disagree. If you know these are matchups sure, because you already know you're gonna notice stuff but if you're just watching it lightly, it's just lots of people being shown in lots of different settings very fast with many colours. Sure, if you choose to go read into it and analyse it to try find out what might happen you'll be spoiled, but it is in my opinion the kind of opening where if you're able to switch off your brain a little you can just enjoy the song and won't get that much spoiled. I honestly don't think it's the same level of spoil as OP#3 where that was like 100% in your face.

Jambron

Anyway, it's a shame they do that but at this point if people are worried about being spoiled by openings, 1000 episodes in they've had enough experience to decide they can skip them :)

Anonymous

i think u missed the part where the mole woman said " it's a new technique from the grandline " and it implies something but i won't say it obviously. btw love ur theorizing and discussions

Extra Crispy

It’s wild how much shit you guys seem to be getting for theorizing. Like 90 percent of the community is just people theorizing and then arguing about those theories. It’s kind of unfortunate people are coming at you this hard out the gate because you don’t really know enough to defend your ideas yet. Like Oda is known for planning stuff out years in advance but he’s also known for adding in large aspects of the story at the last minute so you’re not even wrong about that. I think people are too used to grizzled one piece veterans who will spend two hours arguing over a single line of dialogue from 600 chapters ago. You’ll get there I’m sure we all do 😅 but until then just keep doing what your doing most of us enjoy the discussions and literally pay for the privilege so try not to let all the negativity get to you one piece is about fun damnit! Then eventually it’s about your own personal agenda… but then it’s about fun again!

Chase Turman

I love your reactions BECAUSE of the breakdowns. Forget the haters keep doing what your doing!!

Jessica Garza Marroquin

The reason I joined your Patreon is because I really like your breakdowns and theories, I found you when you were watching Haikyuu, and loved the way you spoke about that anime. I was afraid of starting OP, but watching it with you, it has been great.

In terms of the discussion about "Oda knew from the beginning" vs "Oda came up with something on the spot". I kinda feel it doesn't really matter, like Oda most likely didn't know from the first chapter that objects can eat Devil Fruits, but if he knew it doesn't really change much, beside maybe he would introduce it sooner/ a little different. Oda MOST of the times writes competently enough to not break his world or introduce huge plot holes by "retconning" stuff, so it really kinda irrelevant in which point he come up with some new rules/elements of world, cause if he had them in mind from the start cool, but if not I think it doesn't really change much cause he wouldn't cram them all in first couple chapters anyway and he would introduce them in fitting story point like enemies having a dog-cannon to introduce idea of objects eating Devil Fruits. We can probably safely assume that Oda didn't had around 90-95% of current One Piece planned out in chapter 1 and come up with most of thing around time he was planning to introduce them in story. Like he famously create group of very important to story character week before releasing of chapter in which they were introduce. But like they most likely wouldn't come up in the story anyway until the chapter in which all of them are introduced, so wouldn't really matter if Oda planned them from the very start, year before or week before, because one again only difference would be some more foreshadowing and/or they would be introduced sooner. So, yeah you can assume that in 9 out of 10 cases Oda come up with things around time he plans to introduce them to story, but you can never be sure cause there is really little to no difference in Oda's writing between things he planned ages ago and thing he come up with couple weeks ago.

Anonymous

I think it's because they quite often theorizing about what Oda was thinking while writing, instead of theorizing about characters and what happens in the story. I kinda get it, sometime it feel little like essay about analyzing writing techniques of Eiichiro Oda with One Piece anime as the background, also there was hole "Log Pose and Nami as Navigator" debate, which I also kinda get cause it felt like 15-20 minutes of "calling Oda incompetent" without really understanding and taking into consideration in world explanation how things work and also some Nami "slander". But I didn't really saw that much negativity when they theorizing about what happens in the show itself, like I really don't think anyone had a problem with "Gol D. Roger Cuckold Theory" from the couple of episodes ago. And of course like with most of manga/anime "very passionate" fans get angry all the time and yea I kind of understand some of their criticism. But yes absolutely One Piece is one of last series in which someone should be getting genuine angry about while you speculating and theorizing.

Extra Crispy

Yeah I think when you get fans who are really passionate about something having someone perceived as an outsider criticizing that thing doesn’t go well. And despite being 100 episodes in they are still really new to one piece so they are getting some blowback right now. Other one piece creators and fans criticize the story all the time for example (spoilers) I remember all the “the raid should fail” stuff and in a broader sense there’s been complaints over certain gags or just general pacing that most people have a problem with. I think this will go away with time as we get deeper in the story they will get less flack for being critical and be able to back up more of there ideas with actual evidence unless they come out with some crazy take like they hate white beard or that they hope the one piece was the friends we made along the way in that case it’s open season.

lionstooth

If were bein serious on it too, outside a few outliers the only real prob with his writing style is he writes himself into corners alot

Gaetan

I totally disagree with all the animals abuse stuff. For example if you talk about the unluckies, do you realize they are member of a criminal organisation and there only role is to kill traitor or leaker ? They are professionnal killer. So you expected Sanji to let himself being killed because his opponent is an animal ? If you think yes I can't wait for some future reactions. First signicative interaction in One piece with an animal : Luffy fighting for a dog who tried to save his shop (I know you consider it as filler since it was not in the LA but come on). Second interaction with an animal : Luffy punching the lion who attacked the dog's shop. (ok it was on reverse order but you see what i mean) So for me it's pretty simple, if you are an asshole/bad guy Luffy will have no issues to kick your ass whether you are a male, a female, an animal or a coat hanger. If you are a good guy/have earn crew respect by fighting for your convictions, then the entire crew will gladly put their life on the line to save you. In this aspect I personally think Oda give a big equality message between gender, species, religious etc... Luffy don't give a fuck of what you are or look like, he judges people only based on their acts. Of course it's just my opinion and anyway, great reaction, always nice to have your thoughts on what's going on. (Sorry for poor english)

Mikki_Frost

Truuue, the way they acted like Momoo (Big cow sea beast from Arlong Park) didn't have the beating coming was annoying after being brought up for like the 10th time xD Sanji even said it himself, it tried to eat him. Ass-whooping=Deserved.

Povlo Vlastela

You guys are great. Some people are far ahead in the story and forget how little they understood the story in the middle of alabasta
