Yeah, I really enjoy the tone of One Piece, that it doesn't feel that it has to be edgy to be good. There's always room for humour, even while there are also serious moments and one doesn't take away from the other. Oda has what you might call "soft" worldbuilding, that makes it more flexible, yeah. We know that being in water incapacitates those with devil fruit powers, for example, but not being specific gives a lot of leeway, and you don't feel the canon contradicts itself when something doesn't seem exactly the same way. Hey now, you don't interfere in other people's fights! Arlong has confidence in his strongest followers. He just didn't expect to find someone as strong as Sanji and Zoro in the East Blue.

The lack of edginess is something I really love about One Piece. There are PLENTY of badass characters and yet it never feels "edgy". I struggled to understand the appeal of One Piece when I first got into it years ago because I was so used to animes being edgy and "cool". Nowadays I kinda see edginess as the default for anime and can't watch a series if edgy is all that it is. Like edgy is easy. Idk I'm still not sure exactly how I feel about it but that's where I think I'm at
