I hate being that "Um achtuckally" guy but did want to provide some info behind the way the Oda depicts pirates. Oda made the pirates from 2 types. One is the normal kill whoever, loot, take what you want (morganeer) and everything whereas Luffy and the strawhats are peacemain type pirates where they will steal/loot but that is not their biggest concern but more so just going on adventures, and expanded on, living out their dreams. This was referenced in Oda's earlier work Romance Dawn but hasn't been stated in one piece. He has said he has taken those concepts and pretty much wrote them with that in mind. A lot of the pirates in the show are a mix of the 2 concepts but there are clear cut types of 1 variety with characters/groups

Nami's backstory is one of the things I reckon the anime did so much better. Especially in regards to Bellemere. She has a very strong and recognizable personality that really sets her apart. In the LA the actress was fine but they barely gave it a personality. She's very dull and you barely get to know her, so her death has less impact. You feel for Nami more than anything because you aren't really that invested in Bellemere herself as you don't get to spend that much time with her and has a very forgettable personality, interchangeable with any other random side character parental figure. Here you can really see who Nami takes after. Also, in the LA, they pretty much copypasted her conversation with Arlong without addressing some of its context, so feels a bit weird. They did it way better here. You can't forget this Bellemere.
