They were on their way down the mountain when the blizzard struck. Add in the fact that you can't see the mountains from the city they were initially in, and it implies that there was probably some length of time they took to travel to the mountains.

but Graf himself said that the roads were gonna be unfit for travel. Yes they said they'd be fine cause frieren was there. But she didn't end up having a plan to help Stark in the blizzard anyway other than forcing Fern to carry him on her back. Frieren, who has traveled in these conditions before, and knowing that she wouldn't have the spell necessary to protect them from the elements, would be smart enough to plan for a blizzard and a harsh inter that they knew for a fact was coming. With all of these factors, I just don't understand why Frieren wouldn't opt to spend the rest of the winter in the village, especially since she is always down to waste time and since she is never in any hurry. The only caviat is if there is some reason she wouldn't want to make the trek in the late winter/early spring and summer. But she didn't make mention of that, it seems like she just didn't think it through. As someone who grew up in a place with temps of +35C in the summer, and down to as low as -50C in the winter, I know what its like to live in a similar climate. So from the get go I always question these things, but regardless of that it just doesn't make sense why frieren would opt to chance spending winter in a freezing cabin, vs in the city that is maybe a week or two weeks of travel away. This is the first strong case of convenient writing that I've seen from this show so far. Not a huge deal, because we met a cool character in the process. It just goes against all conceivable logic.
