loved the discussion for this episode! i'm actually a really big feminist and i have to agree with you about the gender roles in Fruits Basket. i LOVE the series, it's one of my favorites if not my favorite, but it definitely does have certain views about how men and women should be which i wholeheartedly disagree with.

Also I'm not saying women shouldn't be housewives, just that I disagree with the notion that that's what ALL women should be

Yeah its really interesting to watch this show for the first time in 2023 for me because I feel like there has been such a push to get away from women as housewives/caretakers etc. in the past several years across a lot of media. So in a weird way some of what is going on in this show feels refreshing in a way I don't think it would have if I had watched this when it came out. I love Tooru's character because she feels very genuine in her actions and the way she fits in to a traditional woman of the house kind of role but I do wish that the overall message of the show wasn't leaning so heavily in that direction of what you said about ALL women being like that. But its also not very interesting to watch something that is overall demonizing of that idea and makes every woman a total badass who rejects all traditionally feminine things.

Yeah I totally get what you're saying, though I'd say the push for women to all be the same archetype of a badass woman was more 2000s- early 2010s, I think in recent years we've been seeing it less and less, in favor of more nuanced depictions. Actually, since people have been getting tired of the badass woman trope, I've seen a lot of people say that women SHOULD be portrayed as feminine, as it's more empowering, but i think that kind of misses the bigger picture. There should be feminine women, but masculine "badass" ones too, because it's ok for a woman to be masculine. Overall what I want is to just have women be portrayed as people, whether they be feminine, masculine, or somewhere in the middle
