Jack Shadow

Klabautermann is actually legend from our world, told by sailors and fisherman on the Baltic and North Sea. So yeah, Oda used that.

So at last, it's finally revealed that Usopp saw Merry's spirit on Skypiea. To me, this is THE reason Usopp went as far as he did with Luffy. Of course all arguments that suggest Usopp was projecting his insecurities are still valid, but this new reveal completely explains all of Usopp's recent behavior imo. He never had direct confirmation until just now but since that night in Skypiea, Usopp had begun to slowly believe that Merry was truly alive. A theory he kept to himself all this time and for good reason, but when we have this context suddenly it makes total sense why he challenged his captain and left the crew. Even after admitting that he'd always known that Merry was beyond saving. Usopp was the only one on the crew to see the spirit. The only one who could possibly suspect that Merry was more than just a ship, which made her diagnosis hit THAT much harder for Usopp. It's like hearing Chopper or Zoro caught a terminal illness and thus had to be thrown away and replaced. Usopp just couldn't accept that, and so he resorted to drastic measures to claim Merry for himself.
