So this is the point of why the curse of turning into an animal which became more metaphorical as the show progressed, is still very important to have been magical in nature. It is there to lean into the "otherness" of the zodiac members compared to normal people. Previous episodes hint at this with them "monsters, no different from the cat." They are all rice balls living amongst humanity i.e. the fruits basket. I don't know how sustainable plot-wise this tension would hold if the magical nature of the curse was removed. P.S. -- I'm not sure if you guys thought this, but to clarify, Akito's dad was never possessed by the God spirit. But he does have a strong resemblance.

Also about Ayame being gay is so amusing to me particularily because I used to headcanon Mine as actually a really feminine dude who likes to dress as a maid lol. It wouldn't make sense, given that curse only works from chest to chest contact from opposite sexes, which does limit that kind of interaction to a heteronormative framework.
