For this project one of my original stated goals was “simple colors” which I managed to achieve for the first handful of pages. But by this scene I’m back to shadows and highlights and reflected light. I started pulling the blue from the water into Kapel to add more glow and despite how I really liked the effect, it was very decidedly against my goals of simplicity for the sake of speed. I’m always trying to optimize that part of my workflow and it just as always breaks down in the middle of a project as I get a bit obsessed with fidelity.

I recomposed this page so many different times. I didn’t want to spend too much time on drawing water sloshing, but I also wanted the biggest panel on the page to carry this really confusing hoisting motion.I moved the elements of the central panel around five or six times, deciding upon second glance that it wasn’t the shot I was going for.

But then the last panel just fell together almost instantly.

I liked a lot of the transition from roughs to inks here. I’d really hit my stride with Kapel, I felt, and doing the various transparencies was quite satisfying. Plus, getting to do some SFX calligraphy is always welcome.
