The irony is that if you cancel Song of the South or Gone With the Wind, you also cancel James Baskett and Hattie McDaniel.

It's been a long time since I watched this movie and I watched with a more critical eye. Certainly it presents a romanticized picture of the Old South. I was really interested to hear Scarlett make a remark to Ashley about slavery. And I think the black characters are treated with respect. As I said earlier, Mammy is the smartest character in the story. And we also see Sam save Scarlett when she is attacked.

You know, I've always felt that the romanticized picture of the Old South, although entirely intended to be as such in the film and the book, still rather serves the story we see unfold well - especially on the screen - the other way. I think it really mirrors Scarlett's longing for Ashley, or I should say the idea of Ashley and how the harsh reality comes crashing down all around her just as the war does, until she realizes, "I've loved something that doesn't really exist", at the end. Gosh, this movie definitely deserves a 2nd look by the current generation that would rather cancel it...😔
