i think the main reason why people don't recognize wuxian although for us it's unfathomable to not recognize him, is because they don't have social media, pictures etc, so when someone dies, they never see their face ever again. After 16 years without seeing a person at all, not even in picture, i think it's quite normal to not recognize him, especially someone thought dead. The clothing could be the biggest giveaway, but it's just clothing so it's not enough to suspect. And the flute, that's why in the presence of Lan Wangji's uncle, he played poorly, and only plays properly around people that didn't know him back then, like the kids. That's why the mask and his odd behavior are enough for people not to recognize him.
