Kia Ora loves,

OK FIRST OFF!!! We have a little meeting spot for the Wellingtom patrons today! It doesn't seem like there are dozens and dozens of you and it's VERY last minute, so I'm doing what seems easiest and I'm gonna gather is in the lobby of our crew hotel...it's an unusually nice one, and there's space, and there's couches, and SHIPS, so I think it's gonna work. I talked to the bar and they said it should be fine if we have 10-20 people.

THAT'S TODAY, SATURDAY. JAN 27th.

3pm (and if anybody gets there early, SAVE A COUCH!!!!)

We will probably be there til about 4pm or so!

Naumi Hotel:

213 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011

Here's the couch I'm eye-ing....

SEE YOU THEN! At the very least, we'll get a little photo and have a brief korero.

SHOW TONIGHT, doors are 7:30pm, show is 8pm sharp.

I'll be 100% signing after the show, and we'll be selling the art prints!

NOW.....New Zealand Survival Songs has been out in the world for a couple weeks now, tour is halfway done.

Here's a ton of photos from last night's show in Queenstown, from Derek Smith…

And Bron Cheung…

AND

I wrote this on IG/FB earlier this morning ….

I love my job. I love when I get to exercise of all of my weird powers in one tiny moment.

There is a theme here, and it continues to be that life will have no intermission, that the making of art and sharing of the story is - for this artist at least - the best way out of the darkness.

Sharing the stories of lockdown and panic and pain, telling the truth even when it’s uncomfortable, laying it bare, making it hilarious, making light out of the dark…this is my job.

My job is so weird. But I’m good at it. And I love it. I just love the shit out of it.

I especially love when I can do it with a teeny tiny room of people like this. The venue fit 60. The final venue of the tour (Melbourne) fits 2,400. What a journey. (Tonight the church in Wellington fits about 500…right in the sweet spot).

I love that the whole show felt like a living room. I could see all my friends faces as I told my New Zealand Survival Stories, and I could thank them in person.

Sue Farry stood up without a mic and spoke about the developers who are trying to build on Bob’s Cove, and asked for actions and donations.

I got to tearfully thank Simone for letting me and Ash be Christmas orphans at her house during the pandemic. It was a perfect show.

My little crew held it down - Brendon wound up building the PA from scratch. Literally, he, like, smelted metal and soldered it together (JK). Michael helped with all the merch and flotsam and jetsam.

And the photos....Derek Smith just showed up unbidden and nailed them. And I accidentally met this extraordinary photographer, Mr Bron James......here's his site:

........

Meanwhile.... If you haven't heard the album, GO LISTEN IN ALL THE PLACES

And don't forget we've made a very limited run of merch - we have the NEW ZEALAND SURVIVAL PACKAGE, which includes:

  • a high quality 8x10 art print of the photograph used for the album cover, signed by me
  • a fancy New York Times-style pullout with an article by me, all about the songs and my time in New Zealand
  • a download code for the album
  • all coming packaged in a custom hand-stamped envelope.

(Note: we originally had the pre-order period for these closing last Friday, but we're keeping it open for ONE MORE WEEK, so last call folks)

And we also have a limited eco-recycled 12" single, including The Man Who Ate Too Much and The Ballad of the New York Times:

The vinyl will be available until it sells out - but we made a super limited run of 500, so don't expect it to be around long.

Get them here:

US store / UK store / Oz store / NZ store
