Good morning loves.

Random, but:

https://youtu.be/0Ns2eiKwZMQ

When I am songwriting, I wind up weird places.

I did not expect to learn all this today. Have you ever wondered what tools fire fighters use to dismantle a car to get someone out? I haven’t.

But wow here we are.

The rescue business.

I am working on an song project (Houdini, mostly, but winding up with fire fighters sometimes happens). I am fascinated by the endless poetry of this training video. This guy. Todd.

I love the part where he says “don’t let pride overcome progress”. He thinks he is talking to firemen about extrication. Oh no sweetie.

You speak to all of us.

“Use the [mangled] vehicle to your advantage”, he says.

The goal of a rip and blitz? I didn’t even know they existed.

“Don’t let pride get in there and just rip”, he says.

Eveyone, listen to this man’s wise poetry.

Go slowly and quickly and efficiently when you are in the rescue business.

Use the mangled vehicle to your advantage.

I love you.

I sent this to one of my friends, whose dad is a firefighter, and he reminded me of my own blog from a while ago where I talked about my lifelong habit of breaking drinking straws when opening them too carelessly. And I just did not want to change my technique despite the damage.

When you are extricating yourself, or others, move with care.

The jaws of life. Or, as I just learned on Facebook, a Hooligan Tool.

I always thought they were bigger, the jaws of life. I imagined a crane.

This is where I am today in poemland.

Like Houdini, you only need one millimeter of wiggle room to get out.

Also totally here for any and all extrication links, anecdotes and trivia, from fire fighters to Houdini.

If I manage to get this song finished, I road test it on the webcast tomorrow. Promise.

Reminder: 5-7pm EST tomorrow, all patrons, lots of guests. Here’s the link to the whole post about it. https://www.patreon.com/posts/80073249?utm_campaign=postshare_creator

ALSO REMINDER THAT The Dresden Dolls shows are about 97% sold out to the mailing list and the last few dozen tickets go on sale to the public tomorrow….if you’ve been waiting, this is the time.

I have a friend who maps caves for a living, he has some incredible stories. I'll see if I can send you a few.

Hmm...not sure if any of my emails have received Dresden Dolls ticket info ... Been checking spam and everything. Weird?

Houdini… I had never thought of my Flight in fun metaphor. My reoccurring dreams about escaping have been replaying the actual events (as best as my unconscious could reproduce them) But, yeah… there was always an element of attempting Invisibility, finding the tiniest vacant space to slip into, the slightest give to gain ground, leverage. Whether I couldn’t find the words, or because speaking wasn’t safe, I was a silent Magician manifesting Freedom, an Illusionist tricking the audience until the last second… and then I was just gone.

Fuuuuuuck. metaphor is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. For years I had a personalized license plate frame that read, “Metaphors Be With You….” It even made the local paper. Speaking of metaphor, oh Queen of the Art form…. What I loved most about therapy was talking about my dreams because my therapist was Freudian/Jungian. I can take whatever metaphor I’m playing with and really go weird and surreal with it, all while maintaining the story in a relatively linear fashion. They’re weird as hell, but story driven. Last night I was playing Donkey Kong online with Kanye and I beat him so he gave me his penthouse for the night. He came over because he was lonely and my friend who happened to be gay was staying with me and that did NOT go well. I told a story of the time Trevor Noah stayed there and how he talked about the giant tub in front of a TV in a seriously tacky red velvet bordello bathroom. Kanye kicked us out after my gay friend beat his ass at donkey king and we saw the tub on our way out. We refused to take the elevator because it was the 41st floor and there were no lights in the elevator car. We agreed we’d all seen that movie and Noped right down the stairs. We paused halfway down to moon Kanye. The overhead “StairMuzak” changed from a loop of various video game sound effects which included the robots from Berserk, the soldiers from Wolfenstein, and the maddeningly catchy Qbery theme to a Star Wars imperial death March version of the Donkey Kong theme and barrels began coming down the stairs. The trick was not to jump over them, but to flatten yourself against the side wall as they went past. Yes we made it out of the building. My therapist would have had a field day with this one.

Have you heard Kate Bush's Houdini? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaUGy7ZMdak (not sure if you'll want to while working on your own thing, but it's very cool)

My fiancé is a paramedic firefighter. I also try to force my straws and end up breaking them lol. He is always telling me, “finesse.” I’ve gotten slightly better at not trying to force things and I have way less broken straws now. I still haven’t quite figured out how to balance gentleness and strength. Maybe when I’m older 🤣

An ex of mine is now a volunteer fire captain. He specialises in this (there is a major highway in his jurisdiction).

Oh Amanda, it’s definitely my anthem. And the very first song I learned to play on my uke. Love you bunches.

Just watched that video, kind of fascinating, how we’ve made these cars that we crash that we then make tools to save ourselves…….

I love this. Also, bragging rights. I was part of our Emergency Brigade at work for a couple of years which includes firefighting and first responder training. We got to practice this on vehicles that were no longer road worth. I have cut doors off of trucks, cut windshields, and completely peeled the roof off of a car and it's SO MUCH FUN (because no one is in danger of course). That's all

I am from Appleton, Wisconsin. A place Harry Houdini called home. We've got a permanent Houdini exhibit at a local museum. It's interactive! You can learn the art of illusion! That's my Houdini connection. A place we both called home. http://www.myhistorymuseum.org/aka-houdini.html

It's amazing how gently those powerful tools are used. So subtle, small movements, and knowing when to stop. I'm a life coach; I worked with a traumatized client yesterday, and the work felt very similar. 'Don't let pride get in the way" is good advice for my work, too. ❤
