my friends. life is strange. if you'd told me 25 years ago that i'd be spending an evening talking with ani difranco about careers, writing process and natural childbirth backstage at a venue we are playing back-to-back on the day after donald trump got elected president of the united states i'm not sure which one i would find more unfathomable.

ani: she is a force, a feminist, a storyteller, a powerful musician and songwriter and guitarist. so much better at her instrument than i am. i did not allow myself to love her as a teenager because i was too afraid of looking in the mirror.

as an adult, i've come to see that she's my lost sister.

i listened to her soundcheck, alone, as she worked out some appropriate songs for tonight. the mood is dark. i sat there awash in gratitude and feeling the strains of her consoling music right now the way people will probably feel about me tomorrow in this same space, where i will be sitting at a piano, 24 hours from now, in the exact same place she is standing with her guitar.

nothing is coincidence.

this is what we do.

life happens, politics happen, babies get born, friends die, weather pours, our country snakes left and right and up and down and into a ditch and rares it's engine and gets pulled out of the ditch by a group effort and meanwhile

always

there is music.

there is music, and songs, and the stories we tell each other about what we are feeling, because we are humans, and this is what we do when we're in pain.

we commune.
we feel.
we rinse and repeat.

there is music.

there is going to be

A

LOT

OF

MUSIC.

i explained patreon to ani. she was intrigued.

it could happen.

everybody....
i love you.

(and if you're here in albany at the ani show, tug my sleeve.)

Music. Indeed. I may need to go do some public dancing to work out this lump in my gut that I can

Last night I saw Jonathan Richman in San Antonio. He brought the benediction and the healing down for us...maybe 50 fans. Next Monday nite it's PWR BTTM in Awe-stun. Then tuesday, flights willing, I will be in Minneapolis to see you. YES MUSIC. it really helps ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

Fuck I love this. Two women I've driven countless angsty hours with listening to albums beginning to end on repeat for almost 20 years. We can all scream and shout and throw things and hug things and weep and melt together - we are here with you.

I've banished fb for a while and I'm just going to hang out more on patreon, because I never comment, but maybe it's time to start. I feel the need to be wrapped in a security blanket of art and music. Everyone keeps telling my girlfriend and I that our concerns are unfounded (her entire family, and like 25% of mine, voted for Trump. All white, all upper middle class, straight nuclear families.) I am an artist, a Native and an Irish half and half mixed heritage pansexual in a same sex relationship in Austin Texas. I'm lucky to live in this strange music and art oasis in this red state, but going back home to Waco and seeing the signs and the mild-mannered, commonplace, every-day prejudice worms into me. Thank you, and thank Ani, for being warriors of song in the war of love vs fear and hate, of art vs. sleepwalking.

I saw you in concert tonight and you are absolutely AMAZING!!! Thank you for being real, raw, honest, hysterical and AMAZING SINGER and ukulele player and pianist! You turned such a shitty time into a beautiful feeling time in my life. You family is pretty adorable as well! And now, I am a patreon subscriber!

Yes, music. I'm going to need lots of music to get through the next 4 years. Love you and Ani. Rock on ladies, give us some music to soothe our battered souls.

Saw you guys at Ani but didn't want to bother you. You seemed to be having a great family night out. It was a really good show! And you last night at The Egg AMAZING! Thank you for sharing you! It was so needed and beautiful!!!!

Somehow I became unpatroned. Odd and problem solved. And upgraded. You are doing great things here . Your tour experiences are of epic level. THANK YOU FOR GOOD NIGHT MOON! It was needed. I gave your Ash (and Holly) a handmade book and a tiny Teddy Bear for tour in Kingston. The book is out now as a (funded +) kickstarter and every one comes with a teddy bear! I wrote it for our imaginary child and illustrated it when the tribe of folks I know all started having little ones, including you! Glad you love being a mom. And being a rockstar. And being out here, living in the open. You inspire and I love you! Cheers! I was introduced to The Dresden Dolls and Ani at the same time by the same person (an older musical guru) when I was 16. Between you all my teenage years were much easier to handle. Big love.

I know what you mean about avoiding the mirror!
