(strictly patron-only)

hello my loves....

i'm doing this release a little differently, so bear with me.

this is a little EP of songs called "Sketches for the Musical JIB", by yours truly and my soul-sister Jason Webley.

first of all, i'm making the download codes available to ALL of you (including the $1 patrons), and secondly, i'm sending you these files before the music goes to the public, which it will sometime in the next few days. i wanted you *all* to hear this before anybody else did.

we're really, really proud of these songs. apart from the edward record, i haven't been writing a lot, and it felt empowering and perfect to do it with jason, my best friend and the godfather to my wee bairn. we alternated songwriting and recording with cooking food and playing with ash. everything is possible, sort of. make your own dreams.

JIB....is a long story. here's the long story short (you'll get the long story when i make these songs public and post a long blog/project-page housing everything - that is also the point at which i'll THING this music):

michael mcquilken is a longtime collaborator of both me and jason. jason introduced us long ago, and michael was also the touring drummer for the grand theft orchestra, my band for Theatre is Evil.

he wrote this play-with-songs, JIB, about seven or eight years ago, and jason and i both saw and loved it. it deals with the interconnectedness of life and people and music. the original play had five or six songs, and when michael decided to relaunch the show in philly/NYC this coming year, he asked if i'd contribute a new song. i told him i'd rather write all of them, with jason as a parner, in the voice of the main character, a rock star named Jib. (you'll recognize her. i say no more.)

these recordings are, as the title suggests, "sketches". we have handed them over to michael and he'll do whatever he wants with them for the musical - rearrange them, de-arrange them, put them in the voices of the actors and the band on stage. we're done. he's on.

jason and i haven't sat down to really co-write anything since Evelyn Evelyn, and we are such an ridiculously joyful songwriting team. we love and push each other. we spent a full week composing the songs at my place in new york and then we went into a studio nearby and slammed them down. jason then went off and mixed everything. it's almost entirely piano and guitar, but there's a little accordion mixed in, and some drums and bass overlaid on certain songs.

.......

here's the song list:

THE BOX SONG (the musical's finale. this one is my favorite.)

THE BOAT SONG (Jib's first full-band song)

THE WOLF SONG (it's scary as shit, headphones please)

THE FEAR SONG (Jib's "musical theater" moment)

THE UKULELE SONG (Jib gets a ukulele)

THE STAR SONG (Jib's first open mic attempt, with her boyfriend)

*the ukulele song will not be made available to the bandcamp/public. it's too goddam silly. but we want you to hear it.

**there is ONE last bizarre little (slightly embarrassing) song that we're going to send to the $5+ backers in a day or two when the songs go public. watch for it.

..........

and here are the files via wetransfer download (....for your ears only. please, PLEASE don't share, especially because we don't want these songs wandering away out of context):

MP3: https://we.tl/tMdtEpBMzO

WAV: https://we.tl/0eo2HIW1Xw

all the lyrics and credits will be posted on the project page.

...............

MEANWHILE, while you download, i've also attached a PDF of the SCRIPT OF THE SHOW. it was my idea to ask, and michael was happy share it with you guys, and you now have a few choices:

take a bath and:

-read the script, understand the context, and then listen the songs.
-read the script and pause when it's song time, then play along.

-ignore the script (fuck that!! i'm taking a bath!!) and just listen the songs.
-delete this email and do nothing LALALALALA

.....whatever you do, i'm very keen to hear your feedback.
it's always exciting and nerve-wracking to release original new music especially in a strange context like a musical and writing as a total fictional character, i've never done it like this before, so it would mean the world to me if you comment on what your favorites are. the songs are all VERY different, different styles, different vibes, as you'll see. i'm intrigued to know what resonates with who and why.

so....click through to comment. i'm waiting. with bated eyeballs.
..................

ARTWORK, and VINYL:

the artwork for the project is by the incredible vladamir zimakov, who's done lots of art for both me and jason (including the single art for "trout heart replica" from Theatre is Evil). the image you see is just a detail - we'll unveil the full monty on release day. it's GORGEOUS.

AND...we anticipated that some of you might yearn for a physical release, so just for kicks we're pressing 1,111 copies of these songs to super-special 10-inch colored vinyl, through jason's record label, 11 records. it's $15, which is insanely cheap for limited vinyl. once they're gone they're gone, and i won't pimp this link to the public until we put the songs out pubicly. go get it:

http://www.jasonwebley.com/store.html

the way things look: the vinyl will contain ALL of the songs. i'll remind you about vinyl when we Thing the project page....but i have a feeling these will disappear, so don't wait long.

.............

THE JIB KICKSTARTER.....

this is a good time to remind you that the play's production itself has a kickstarter, they're at about $30k of a $50k goal. i know some of you have already backed...for that....i thank you. all backers get access to a FILM of the show when all's done. so even if you're in venezuela, you can see it. i expect that the film will be insanely high quality, given their budget. so help them if you can, they're holding their breath and we all hope they make it to $50k:

..........

ok.

thank you again for being patrons so that we can do projects like this. jason will be getting 50% of the profits from this patreon Thing when it gets Thinged.

it means everything to me. this is my life, and these are my friends, and this is what i love.

i'm going to go to bed now like it's christmas, because when i wake up, i know some of you will have already listened.

that's it.

i love you.

p.s. i'm happy for you to share on FB/twitter/etc THAT THIS MUSIC EXISTS and WHOOHOO YOU GET TO HEAR IT NYA NYA NYA, but please, again, don't share the links or the files. just listen. in a day or two, we'll let it rip, and then you can go share share share to high heavens on bandcamp and youtube.

I've been listening these songs for quite a lot of time, I love them all, but I think The Fear Song is somehow strangely touching - the "If you’re not scared, you’re not in love" part, probably hits me strongly. I love AFP & DDolls, but with the -nth listening of that song (and Bed..., Trout... and so many more)...well, I just HAD to became a patron.

I like the .pdf file, it's cool.

"All their motors run on fear..." I am loving these lyrics - I feel like there is so much to unpack in them and it's really interesting to hear a the variation in the music - something set for a musical vs other contexts. The art is beautiful and I can't wait to repeat listen and digest and get this all down in my soul!

Quick question, did the *silly* $5 level release come out already? If so I missed it.

Michela M.

My favourites of this EP so far are The Fear song and The Star song. Haven't finished reading the script yet, and I've only listened to it all today. Also, not a 5$ patron so can't comment about the extra song. ❤

Can't name a favorite — they're all good. Even the Uke Song. ;) I ended up backing the Kickstarter because it led me to Leah's work with Firehorse, which I've fallen in love with. (I have some more of her stuff queued up on my Spotify commuting playlist somewhere … oo! It's coming up Friday!) Now I'm even more excited because of these songs. I'm not even much of a theatre geek, but I'm going to read the script anyway. If it reads as good as the songs I might just lose it.

I super love this. It sounds amazing! My favourite song's absolutely The Boat Song!

I LOVE the star song <3 (Oh, and the box song.) I didn't yet have time to read the pdf, so it will be interesting whether the story I'm making up in my head will resemble the official one at some point.. thanks so much! I've also already written to Jason, it's terrific to hear recordings of you guys together again. Thank you!

Great mini album , Evelyn Evelyn was already great so hopefully we'll get more Amanda/Jason collaboration in the future. It's magical every time.

Karina

costs more for shipping the vinyl than it does for the actual vinyl :o
