hallo loves,

short story: the next takeover of my @amandapalmer instagram account is happening, starting in a few hours....this week's guest is musician emily wurramara. feel free to go give her a follow at @emilywurramara_. she's going to be running my feed from tasmania for the evening and morning, and then we'll do a live chat. you know what to do. tune in, listen, learn, and support.

if you missed the memo, i've been handing the reigns of my insta-mic over to different black voices and i plan to keep doing this indefinitely. the #blacklivesmatter hashtag may have died down on most peoples social media feeds, but progress is going to be slow, evolving and life-long. i hope that this small contribution, to simply hand the mic over and let my black brothers and sisters speak for themselves, can be one drop in the bucket of a needed tsumani-level change.

if you missed the previous takeover, from melz of free black university, you can read the recap of it here in this post. we helped raise over £10,000 for the crowdfund to fund the free black university. (which is incredible, and thank you, as i know it was many of you in patreon-land who donated).

i'm wide open to ideas about other voices who deserve amplifying, please leave commnents if you have ideas. i already have a few people lined up including dread scott, a brooklyn-based artist most famous for his controversial artwork that led to a supreme court decision, regie gibson, a poet and teacher-activist from boston, and more.  emily will be taking over the account starting at 7pm AEST in tasmania tonight (which is 9pm in wellington NZST and 5am EDT in new york). if you can't tune in live, remember that IG stories last for 24 hours in the feed and i'll be saving her takeover as a highlight on my profile so stay tune to the recap.

emily will have full reign to post to my feed and my IG stories. when it wraps, we'll do a Q&A conversation together on instagram live, where you can ask questions and chat with us. if all goes well on the tech side, i'll archive our IG live and share it in a post on my feed and in my IGTV.  we'll end the take over and start the IG LIVE at 10pm AEST in tasmania (which is 12am NZST in wellington and 8am EDT in new york). you can see what time it is for you, here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20200723T120000&p1=396&p2=264&p3=179

here are some words from emily herself...

Hi!
My name is Emily Wurramara - My traditional name is Ululbulul and I’m a warnindilyakwa singer/songwriter living in Lutruwita (Tasmania)    My people are from Groote Eylandt in the gulf of Carpentaria.  During my takeover I will be shedding a light on the injustices faced by my people in so-called “Australia”, yarning to a few friends and sharing my story and song with you all! See you tomorrow!  Emily Wurramara
here's some more about emily, from her bio:
Hailing from Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, Aria Nominated, singer/songwriter, Emily Wurramara relocated to Brisbane at the age of six.
After releasing her award-winning EP Black Smoke in 2016, she’s made it her mission to bring her culture to the urban consciousness.

Wurramara dropped her debut LP Milyakburra in 2018, a collection of songs detailing the conflicting themes of life in the city and her roots in the NT, and further cemented herself as an artist to watch.

Incorporating English and her traditional language Anindilyakwa in her music, Wurramara is not only working to break the mould for Indigenous artists, but she also aims to bring female voices of her culture to the forefront.
Supporting the likes of Mavis Staples, Rob Thomas, Neil Finn, colored stones and the Cat Empire- Emily Wurramara's voice and humble storytelling will make you feel all sorts of feelings.

i covered emily's song, BLACK SMOKE with clare bowditch on the flash charity record i released this past january to help with the bushfires across australia.

Love that Emily is taking over! She’s such a voice for our times and such an incredible artist and person. Lucky to have toured with her over last few years. Really hope you can all tune into her voice and perspectives. Fair play to you Amanda for seeking out such a voice to elevate! Xo

you should hand your insta-mic over to Miss Eaves! Brooklyn-based feminist rapper who's killing it with the self respect and body positivity messages.

Thank you ... as a friend of Emily on the receiving end of her phone call after the crap on the insta take over last night... the way you held space and strength for her today on the next live. You were amazing. Truly. Thank you. After the chat today, I was going to suggest an American indigenous female voice to follow up so that people can understand the same issues are happening in america... either Raye Zaragoza or Black Belt Eagle Scout. Thank you again for your spirit, soul and learning!
