hallo my loves

greetings from seattle where i’m taking some down time with my bestie jason webley. i popped up on stage at a bar with him at a little perfect red-lit joint called the hotel albatross in ballard ...

we didn’t really rehearse. well, that’s not exactly true. here we are rehearsing for like 8 minutes in the parking lot behind the venue.

we were terrible! it was awesome. we played “electric blanket“ and “elephant elephant” and then  did a scratchy-voiced version of “in my mind".

i got to see the local legend baby gramps play his bizzaro and beautiful pun-ridden songs, and my friend lady rizo stopped by which made me so happy...here we all are:

here is dan.

talk to me.

!!! speaking of my podcast, one of my upcoming guests, jamil zaki, has HIS BOOK COMING OUT TODAY. it’s called “The War For Kindness"

and i read it in preparation of our interview - it’s really incredible, i highly recommend it.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/550616/the-war-for-kindness-by-jamil-zaki/9780451499240/

"Empathy is in short supply. Isolation and tribalism are rampant. We struggle to understand people who aren’t like us, but find it easy to hate them. Studies show that we are less caring than we were even thirty years ago. In 2006, Barack Obama said that the United States is suffering from an “empathy deficit.” Since then, things only seem to have gotten worse.
It doesn’t have to be this way. In this groundbreaking book, Jamil Zaki shares cutting-edge research, including experiments from his own lab, showing that empathy is not a fixed trait—something we’re born with or not—but rather a skill that can be strengthened through effort. He also tells the stories of people who embody this new perspective, fighting for kindness in the most difficult of circumstances. We meet a former neo-Nazi who is now helping extract people from hate groups, ex-prisoners discussing novels with the judge who sentenced them, Washington police officers changing their culture to decrease violence among their ranks, and NICU nurses fine-tuning their empathy so that they don’t succumb to burnout.
Written with clarity and passion, The War for Kindness is an inspiring call to action. The future may depend on whether we accept the challenge."

So excited for Portland. My partner and I are flying out to see you and celebrate our 8th anniversary. Hopefully we can make it to the record store and a *fingers crossed* patron photo meet-up!

Shattered that I had to give my tickets away for your Vancouver show as I must be away on business, had so hoped to say hello and have the stunningly beautiful art book signed. My lucky friends, the beneficiaries of my loss, are blessed indeed to be there in my place. Enjoy Vancouver, please. Until next time.

Can’t wait to see you on Saturday!

Yeah, I’ll listen to the Dan Savage podcast, but I’ll probably hide it from my daughter who is 18 and queer and has many trans friends and she’s a New AFP fan who will be deeply disappointed that you gave Dan the space to talk. It looks this collaboration isn’t wildly popular with those of us who have commented here. I was a big fan of his column in the 90s, it seemed revolutionary then. I’m not sure he’s serving us well now though.

Michael C. Foy

I will have to read your Dan Savage interview transcribed, if someone takes up that arduous task. I won't listen to him any longer, as a TransParent I have little time for TERFs, and he doesn't seem to have broaden his mind and begin speaking out for Trans and Bi rights, nor POC. His mea culpa would have to be sincere, and believable, but we are still waiting, and will alas, likely never happen.

what’s the scoop on the amazing patreon photos for Portland? I’m coming to the show on June 9th!

I saw Evelyn Evelyn. I had a migraine I ended up hospitalized for but I still came to the show. I met Sxip! It was one of the best times. Jason’s solo performance left me speechless. I really hope to have another chance to see you two together again ✨

PS ... if you time machine back and see the crowd photo from that show there are two empty seats near the front in the right LOL. That was me busting it out of there before I collapsed. I had no idea there’d be a photo. Regrets 😂
