Update: we started recording a 3d sketching video for a variant of Frostmetal orcish armor. At this early stage Zbrush is used freely as sketching and concepting tool to find interesting shapes and composition. Refining and cleaning will happen in a later stage. Sadly, Zbrush crashed during the export so we saved only one part of the record. Next time we will use a dedicated software for sure :)

Hello guys!
We hope you are having a wonderful week.
As the testprinting team is working hard on the next release coming in December, the Sylvan Knights Set, we are already planning ahead for January.

As we mentioned before, for the moment we are switching from "choose a theme" Poll to "help us making the best Set we are inspired to do".

For January 2021, if we have not a real Orc invasion (that would not surprise us at the moment!), we are really inspired to finally bring life to the Frostmetal Clan, a set of Orcs and Ogres from the frozen lands of Skutagaard, dressed in dark heavy armour, large fur cloak, tusks, skulls and so on. Th e Frostmetal Orcs and Ogre are also damned by an ancient Oath, wich makes them immortal and gives them unholy powers: we will make sure this blackguard-deathknight vibe is visible on the sculpts :)

A lazy screengrab of SOME of our old Frostmetal sketches.
These are OLD, we really will make sure the theme is better developed it more.

Having no Theme Poll will ensure that we are working on something we crave to sculpt, give us few more days to plan, not rushing some late heroes and so on.
The truth is that being Patreon subscription monthly based, we need to make sure the full set is ready in time for the following month, running like crazies. For the now larger sets to be supported and tested multiple times, we have about till day 20 to make a fleshed out 3d Printable Release. Sets like the ones we do were usually handled for several months by large companies who counts many artists ^^
This is not easy, it's a challenge every month and we costantly feel like running against time; but we always manage it at the end, and it's really satisfying to finally see the final set coming up, expecially when you guys post amazing photos of prints and paintjobs.

Still, we will post many Polls (and read every Comment) to ask you feedback about the various Sets. What kind of cavalry is better? Wich Weapon would you like to be included? What class should be the heroes? And so on.

What about the missing Poll options?
To make sure no one is left behind, we are unlocking the famous Greatgoblin ( bugbear proxies) and Shortfolk (gnomes/halflings) as FREE bonus models, Goal based. The fist batch should be unlocked really soon!

Future Sets

About the Sets that will come after the Frostmetal, we are now inspired to try something new: models themed on a Adventure and not only encounter/themed groups.
Something like "Siege on Troll Castle" having player Heroes riding a Troll fortress. let's see how things evolve, we will sure ask about this and make polls in future^^

A frostmetal early anatomy sculpt. This could easy be twised into a Frostmetal Orc or Ogre depending on the situation. Obviously they will come covered in Armor and decorations!

FROSTMETAL POLL: More Orcs or more Ogre?

Having a limited time to make the Sets, we'd like if you crave for more Frostmetal Orcs or Frostmetal Ogre.
For the Oni Clan, that had oriental themed Orcs and Ogre-like creatures, we had 4 orcish Oni, and 2 Ogre-like Oni, the Kyojin. Heroes were splitted in half: Yoshigruzu the Orc and the Shaman Ogre with two heads, Goraku.
Having also variants for man and ladies models, having 2 different races makes organization even more harder ^^ we had only one modular lady Ogre and one modular male Ogre for example.

For the Frostmetal Clan, would you like to be the Set more focused on Orcs, more on Ogre, exactly the same number of Orcs and Ogre (3 and 3 modular, 1 and 1 heroes)?
Or would you like to have only 1 race for the Frostmetal Clan, making it a Orc only tribe, or a Ogre only set?

Scaling up Orcs into Ogre will surely be not impossible, same for the opposite.
About style, Frostmetal Ogre would be larger (like our Ogre Marauder) and generally a bit more fatter, while Orcs would be about the size of our Orc Barbarians Set, more muscular but smaller than Ogre.

Thank you so much, we really need your help :)

The Discount Code BFAG50 is still working: 50% OFF in all our catalogue on MMF till the end of the month.

Well, I know what I want and I know I’m not gonna get it. :P

Anonymous

I like this plan!

Anonymous

Super pumped!

Anonymous

Been looking forward to these!

Bryce Hooper

Sweet! I'm happy to see whatever you guys design. After seeing your bugbears I want more of them too.

Anonymous

50/50 is cool, we trust you guys to bring a different flavor to this guys to complement many of your previous sets. Value!

Anonymous

Only Ogre would be a lot like warhammers frost ogres, would prefer that personally!

Anonymous

I love orcs

Anonymous

Love that you've chosen to design what you're inspired by. The Frostmetal Clan will be epic!

ArtisanGuild

The last Poll had Sylvan Knights (coming in December), Gnomes and Greatgoblins (coming for Free as bonus models soon),... what did you voted exactly :O ?

Anonymous

I’d like to see more orcs with less spikes on their back/shoulders.

Erik Watts

Ogres as hero and larger infantry. Orcs as main force, secondary hero and pinup.

Red Headed Steppeson

Huh, Patreon app doesn’t like replies to replies. But more a joke about how I’d love to be all ogres but know thats gonna lose. xD I’m actually excited cus I voted Frostclan every month though. Hoping to use them with your Vamps for a AoS army idea.

Anonymous

That reminds me to buy the other orc set while the sale is still on! 🥰

TheMorrigan

I love the new approach to the sets! More variety each month is great and I'm really looking forward to it!!

Anonymous

I'm so happy you guys are doing polls this way now. It takes a lot of drama away from the polls and we don't have to vote for something just because its going to win. You seem really happy with this decision and it shows in how you talk about your product

Obscurities in Miniature

However you want to do it, as long as everything looks cool! I really like the plan moving forward as it doesn't lock you in to one specific design.

Anonymous

Few ogres as some kind of special encounter inside an orc tribe area :D

Anonymous

I think the decision to stop the polls is amazing. I really like that you are doing all three of the things that were left. I really hope to see some barbarian axe wield Orcs, but also some full plate evil paladins would be really cool. Very excited to see what you will do. A cool Shaman would also be awesome.

Anonymous

Live your truuuuth

Anonymous

One request... if you have an animal included (like dire wolves or something) could you make a "without-saddle" version? Thank you!

adam

i think leaning slightly on the orcs side feel better for me anyway i think scaling models up almost always work better than scaling down

Anonymous

I love the magic eye-thing in the sketches, would hope that stays on. Otherwise maybe a snow/frost-covered model, signifying their immortality making their bodies so cold the snow doesn't melt? You could also take inspiration from the recent d&d book Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. It includes a winter goddess, yeti's and frozen undead that emit a bright light from their eyes and mouth.

A_G_S

More orc focussed for the modular options with an ogre hero/mounted option would be what I would like to see personally

Rob Leonard

Assuming we have an even split between orcs and ogres (based on how voting is going at the moment), I also assume you'll have an orc hero and an ogre hero. Could you please also have both an orc shaman and an ogre shaman? Thanks for considering! :)

jimraynor

I would like to see the set more orc themed because they are then a good addon to you orc barbarians and so you can use both sets combined for an adventure or for a printed army. As mount like to see heavy armoured direwolves.

Anonymous

Themed adventures sound amazing! Would that be something like - a Party of 4 Adventurers, 4 modular minion enemies, two henchman enemies and a Boss Monster?

Red Headed Steppeson

Oh, as a note, if it is going towards adventures, I’d love if that also doubled as a way to expand older sets. New stuff for them would be awesome and also help folks on the wargaming side as well as the RPG folks.

Anonymous

I dont mind a few ogres but I have far more use for orks than ogres. Very excited to see what we get regardless. AG has consistently been more than worth the monthly $10, wether or not my choice from the poll has been the winner. I think this kind of poll going forward is a fantastic idea. Same with asking about base sizes.

Anonymous

1) Thank you! I was voting and hoping for the Frostmetal clan but there was no point in complaining about the poll results. I knew whatever you sculpted would be fantastic so all I had to do was bide my time and wait. Divide the modular troops and heroes evenly with 2m/1f modulars of both races and the heroes flipped compared to the Oni clan (Ogre Warrior and Orc caster). If someone only wants a single race we can always mirror and reprint or try a bit of kitbashing to give them variety. However it will be practically impossible to evenly divide the three cavalry units without either adding another rider or chopping them so we only get lower bodies which we add to the torso of our choosing. I can see even more complications with the mounted units due to different mount sizes needed, and it really wouldn’t be worth your time trying to make all of us happy. Just divide these three up however you feel works best and we’ll figure it out in the printing.

Tim Leach

Trying to understand the poll. Is the poll just a survey of opinions or is the winner absolute? Half and half is ahead but Orks are the clear preference. I guess what I am saying, is a vote for half and half a vote for "I don't care one way or the other" or a vote for "I want exactly 50:50"?

Anonymous

Dont lose the pin up. Its why I chose Artisan Guild in the first place. Kinda lame were losing choice to ease, but its understandable.

Anonymous

I am a little sad to see the polls for deciding on future sets go, I wish it would have been "decide the set in 2 months" rather than next month or something like that in order to give the team more time to make the required models But I can see why it would be the way it is now... though I will miss the ability to feel like I had an impact on the set that was further than "should we change the scale of what we have"

Anonymous

Not a fan of the planed change to the monthly sets. I preferred your Warband like release over the more loosely connected Sets from other Artist on Patreon. The fact that you could Print a Frostgrave band of any of your Monthly release is highly appreciated.

Anonymous

Why not still have polls where we can decide what factions we want in the coming months, but still have these polls to narrow it down once the month is decided?

Anonymous

I voted for half and half but I would love it if the Ogre half had a Half-Ogre or 2. Something similar in stature to Dunn.

ammut

ORCS! FINALLY! GET HYPE!

Anonymous

Can you make some faces smiling? Orc and Ogre can´t be angry :-)

Bill Curran

This is going to be epic!

Anonymous

POLAR BEAR MOUNTS

Anonymous

I would just like to ask that there be orc women in action poses as well. I love winter themes. Super excited by this.

Björn Burkart

I prefer Ogre cause you can use them as Proxys for GW Beastclaw riders. I dont really know any whinter themed Orc races in any game you could use the Models as Proxys. Or you cover the most of the bodys in armour and furr and make swachable heads so u can print ether ogre or orc and the rest is simular. The size is determened by the print size factor.

Anonymous

I second the idea of orc/orge shamans.

Robb

A traditional mount would be hard to pull off for an ogre. Perhaps a mastodon or dire bear pulled sled? If the cavalry is orc or half-ogre then dire bear might be best! Why bear? They’re broad and muscular and freaking terrifying and seemingly a better fit for the heavy-metal theme of this release.

Robb

also want to say so happy that you have decided to choose the subject based on your inspiration, ESPECIALLY if it makes the work-load more manageable on you guys! We will be more than content to pitch ideas and help you shape the final product—but you ultimately have to be happy with the end product or else why do it?

Anonymous

Love the idea of the adventure based theme

ArtisanGuild

I love the original Icewind Dale (Infinity Engine old school game) on PC! It's fantastic they did a new book about it :)

ArtisanGuild

Yes, that's mostly the plan :) Trying of course to cover the amount of models we will normally do. And there will always be a Pinup of course

Jonnyballday .

Do you not like the orc barbarian set? The first set sounds like what you want.

ArtisanGuild

Pinups will always be part of the sets. Adventures (alternated to our classic thematic releases) will help making things that doesn't fit our usual sets. But we will never stop making sets like the ones done till today ^^

ArtisanGuild

It's still the plan to mainly make warband sets. But if we are fancy to make some models that doesn't fit a warband we can switch one moth to something different :)

Jonnyballday .

Or pick a race for the calvary and then make the hero the other race mount.

SuperHappyNihilist

Would absolutely love to see a giant mountain goat as one of the mounts/cavalry options!

Anonymous

Would love see some nice and frosty mounts for these guys- musk oxen, woolly rhinos, maybe a pygmy mammoth?

Anonymous

Don’t know about anyone else but I’m already considering them as chaos marked/corrupted orcs and ogres.

Anonymous

Awesome! Ending the polling-drama and giving you more artistic freedom and still let the community have some impact. Win-Win. Well done!

Anonymous

Ogres please. There are plenty of various orc themes out there, but few if any Ogre themed sets. Thanks guys!

Anonymous

The more inspired you are by a theme, the more passion you are likely to put into developing that theme. I am happy to sacrifice choice for something even more fantastic. (And I would have said the same even if I hadn't voted for frostmetal)

Anonymous

Winter theme is really cool AND I think you should always sculpt what inspire YOU. Inspiration brings greatness! Just try to continue to encourage variety. There are other realms than D&D that are worth exploring...

Anonymous

have the ogres as the replacement for mounted unit and the rest orcs would be perfect for me

Anonymous

I actually do kinda' like the idea of Frostmetals being all-inclusive and including all races. Kinda' like how you could be any race as a Death Knight in WoW. Death knows no race and takes all. That being said, I'm a huge Orc fan so... yeah. LoL I'm imagining a Goblin or Gnome/Halfling-sized character in full armor swinging a 2-handed weapon twice his size and owning it and I absolutely love it. And I absolutely love the idea of diving into content theme sets. Looking forward to whatever you do for the Frostmetal Clan and beyond (and again, thanks for bring the Great Goblins and Halflings to us through other means!).

Anonymous

For mounts do some Frostworgs with and without armor😍 Armored Bear for the Hero Unit would be nice

Paul Goodwin

I’d love a Cowled head (hooded) option; also, perhaps... reindeer pulling a battle platform.... (sleigh)

demonwombatofdoom

Love the details in the physique, It's going to be a shame to cover it all up in armour. Hope one of the Ogres can be topless and in a direwolf cloak. Maybe arms up, flexed and roaring like king kong for intimidating pose.

Anonymous

We already have a metric shit-ton of Orcs! Why does everyone want more?!?! Just one full set of Ogres would be an awesome addition to have more variety.

Anonymous

I suggest a big ice elemental or ice golem style for beast.

Anonymous

would it be possible to do modular heads? that way we can get either orcs or ogres =) and your work is amazing =)

Anonymous

I am sure you meant raiding but I am now intrigued by Heroes riding a Troll fortress :p.

Anonymous

I'm liking this new direction of choice. Let's see how it goes.

Anonymous

Maybe you guys could make a month with only non-humanoid creatures

Robert Mitchell

I am in full support of AG sculpting what inspires them for the monthly release. I have loved all the sets that have been done up to this point. And am sure I will love what ever AG comes up with. Off the last poll I would have thought the Beetroot Swashbucklers would be the next full set released, and the Frostmetal clan offered up for free as a goal. It is a little sad that yet again those few that cry the most seem to change the way AG does things. I support what ever decisions AG makes to make their lives easier and more inspired. I would suggest what others have mentioned before, is plan your sets for 2 months out, so you have time to work on them. A few sculptors I have had the pleasure of talking to seem to like working on 2 projects overlapping to give a few small breaks. Works for me with my work, working on one project long enough will burn you out fast. As for this poll, I will be sitting out on voting, so those who wanted this set can get what they wanted.

Anonymous

Would love to see modular heads on the Orcs also if possible,

ArtisanGuild

Thank you so much for your comment :) About the beetroot, it's us who decided to make it as bonus simply becaue at the moment we are not really inspired to make a full month of shortfolk. To prevent a little disaster (we tried), se make few freebies heroes now and see if we end up woth better result in a near future. In the other hand, Andrea is craving to sculpt the frostmetal a lot :)

Anonymous

I guess what people want in terms of what's in the sets depends on how they use the mini's. For me, there are basically 3 uses: 1. Painting - Any model is good for this, really, as all your models are absolutely stunning to begin with. 2. RPGs - I play D&D and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, and having as many variants of any given creature can be great to get the perfect mini. 3. Miniature Wargames - This is the hardest one, for me. I would absolutely love to field actual armies of your sculpts, but it's unreasonable to expect 10 variations of a single creature type so I can print a varied unit of, for example, 'Elf with handweapon and shield', or 'Elf with two-handed weapon'. Although I would love that, it'd mean that the same theme would have to be revisited probably at least 3 times. The models are pretty damn good for skirmish-size wargames though! Having said that, although having a variety of creature types in a single release is pretty cool for use 1, it's worse for uses 2 and 3. The only reason I have not printed full armies of a particular theme yet is simply because there are veeeery few sculpts out there that show 6+ varieties of the same creature with the same basic loadout (such as 'using bows' or 'using spears'), and I simply hate the look of a unit of 10 to 20 guys where you basically have 5 or 10 exact clones. In the end, though, I feel that you should honestly do what feels right to YOU. You guys do a tremendous amount of work every month, and the absolute fastest route to burning out on it is by caring too much about what people want. You'll never make everybody happy, but we're all happiest if you continue doing your wonderful work. ------ Unrelated to all of this (except maybe use number 3 of the list above)... You got me all hyped up a while back when you mentioned the skirmish wargame you were writing for your models. No pressure or anything (although of course I want to see/play it so bad!), but are there any updates on that front? Any sneak-peeks at the mechanics of the game? Any chance for volunteers to play-test or proof-read it? I'm just anxiously awaiting any updates, really! So exciting! EDIT: Another thing just came to mind that I think I should emphasize; No poll got me more excited about potential releases as the one where you actually revisited the wood elves! Although I get that you can't keep rivisiting the same themes (like I mentioned before), I'd be absolutely thrilled for these kind of 'expansions'!

Anonymous

I was very happy with the naga tribe and wouldn't mind it being revisited as an adventure. Perhaps a conflict between a pirate/fighters guild expedition in the jungle and the native naga/amazon tribes.

Anonymous

For me it's something along #3, tabletop/board game aspect - that's why I have been excited about the addition of cavalry and why I would love to see previous factions expanded too (creating more variations within each faction but keeping the same overall feel - not necessarily variations of the same miniature but rather more different units of the same faction). That is also the reason why shortfolk or exotic Oni were not of much interest for me personally (but I can see how people might find them useful from RPG or painting perspective).

Anonymous

i would like to see human adventurers or warbands in the future, also i would love to here about game system i think its good time tor that dont you? 😃

Anonymous

I was interested in this part of the Frostmetal clan - "DeathKnights, Blackguards and Evil Champions".

Anonymous

Perhaps a mix of the races in the dark and foreboding armor of the previous comment?

Anonymous

Orc Warlord: Ok guys lets make an Oath and be cursed with undeath, so we can fight for all eternity! Hehe Also: if we scale up the Orc models we could actually make some Ogrilons and Orogs! (Half Orc & Ogre) The hero in this set could even be one of these!

Mordaga

I would love to see some "battle pets". Especially because I have yet to find anyone sculpting cool "Flesh Hound" alternatives. War hounds, hell cats, etc would be sweet!

Anonymous

Cant wait!!

Anonymous

Cause orcs are cool and I have way more ogres than orcs in my stl library, also various orcs are more useful in a Dnd game than a bunch of different ogres most of the time.

Anonymous

Looks awesome! Will there be variants with helmets on?

Ryley Dempsey-Spearing

I really like that look of no armor renders aswell 😱 can we possibly get the bear torsos versions

Anonymous

I would love to see more head swap options. For example old school pig faced orks. Or porks. If you want a more self directed approach why not offer us multiple concepts that your excited about and then let us pick from those.

BeardMonster

Really happy to hear you're changing up the themes. As awesome as the work is always, was getting tired of see the same type of mobs / chars again and again. Had me worried when more orcs showed up. Love you guys, keep at it!

Anonymous

Can we get the main heroes with a helmet option?

Anonymous

Love it! These are going to look great! Plus, focusing on things you WANT to sculpt means more love and passion will go into the models. You guys will also have more fun, so right on!

Don McLaughlin

I prefer to have the themes picked by the artist doing the sculpt. It just seems like the artist would be more easily inspired that way. It also leads to less hurt feelings that someone's choice is going for months without being picked.

Anonymous

My grandma had a saying.. 'If it aint broken, dont try to fix it'. I really dont understand why you'd change your whole setup now, where it has been working so great! Having themed groups was always great! I need a vampire? Print one from the vampire group. A drow? Just have a look at the dark elves group. Why suddenly change that to encounter based? Honestly, this is a bit of a concerning development. I am personally worried that there will be less useful models. No offense, but I dont need a troll castle whatever its supposed to be. I need commonly used models. I could understand this pracice if you'd already exhausted all the 'common pillars of RPG' but you havent really. Where are the gnomes? The halflings? Not a lot of variety with the humans neither, is there? Fey, Rogues, Bugbears and hobgoblins, undead.. the list goes on an on, so much stuff I'd love to vote for and see it before a troll castle.

Anonymous

I have no idea what you are talking about. Orcs arent really similar to dwarves are they? And there was quite a bit variety between Griphkin and Kobolds. Changing up the theme towards encounter based is worrisome to say the least. I make my own encounters and I am afraid it will mean less useful models in the future.

Anonymous

woah the armor is looking awesome, seriously AG never disappoints

Anonymous

I'm not sure if the polls are going away entirely, as I loved voting for the polls and the polls were picked by the most popular option. Adventure themes still found fun, but honestly, of thr 80 comments you get, thousands of people would vote in the polls. I really would love to feel like I get something of a choice in what gets picked, rather than the vocal minority getting what they want now. The beetroot pirates had thousands of votes beside them-- orcs only ever got 10%.

Anonymous

Very cool videos. I went back and watched a few of the older ones (very much enjoyed the Xantaras one, and I love that model). If you decide to live stream them again, please let us know, I'd love to watch. Otherwise, keep up the great work.

ArtisanGuild

We are not going to change in fact. Perhaps out of 12 months we make two adventure pack in order to make some heroes and monsters who doesnt need a full themed set

Anonymous

Since you guys said to post ideas for future sculpts here... any chance you'd consider a minotaur clan?

Anonymous

Or maybe the hero is a Half bread of Orc & Ogre, like a Ogrilon or a Orog, and we can ajust the scale to fit more Orc or Ogre size

Anonymous

Well they could give us some options based on what AG want to do (like 3 to 4 still) and we just chose the order they will eventually come

Anonymous

Yeah! Half Orc and Ogre (Ogrilons and Orogs) would be nice, we can even adjust their size to fit more Ogre or Orc size

Anonymous

Well, Ogres kinda have a bigger belly then Orcs so... switching head doesnt do that much in this case

Anonymous

Oh boy bring us some Yuan-ti Pureblood Casters too! Hehe

Bernat Rovira Lastra

Hi!! Love the orc style!! When I imagine orcs, your design and aesthetics is by far the one i like more!! One question... Can we have an orc (and more in the future) army?? Pleeeeease!! We will take care of him, they don't eat too much and they will sleep outside!! Pleeeeease!!!

Bernat Rovira Lastra

I have ALL of your sculpts ;) ( or at least all the ones i know!)

TheCraftingDen

Honestly, I wouldn't mind letting you guys do the theme you WANT to do rather than putting it up to a vote. A vote still doesn't guarantee that everyone gets the models they voted for and if the models would be better, and you guys would have more fun sculpting them, by letting you guys choose which models you feel like sculpting, I'd be happy to forgo my option to vote.

CURTIS CRADDOCK

Hoping there are also female orcs and ogres as well.

Anonymous

I’m really excited that we finally got frost men!!!!!!!!… because this means they finally won’t be lingering around and taking a spot on the polls anymore! Yay!!!!!! Lol.
