Behind the Scenes - Creating a Virtual Airplane Interior

A more in-depth than is strictly necessary look into how I approach doing virtual sets.

It totally didn't show in the actual video like it was visual effects; the phone even seemed to show the interior of the plane when he moved it way from the window and was filming the forward interior of the plane. Excellent work!

Wow. That is an incredible amount of work. The result looked excellent!

This is absolutely amazing. Your dedication is mind blowing. You really should open up a second YT channel for these stunning making of footages.

You know what? I have just bought a simple green screen set. This will keep me busy for the next weeks and months. I sure intend to learn this special method of being creative.

I'm blown away. I hadn't known it was a virtual set, let alone how complex even a "mundane" one can be. It was fascinating to see those tools, and the number of details you needed to attend to. ... 15 or 16 hours? I'm curious how powerful of a computer you're using, and also how you guard against needing to re-do it.

Freaking genius...

"Award Hall.blend" -- Living the virtual dream, eh Capn?

I've got one of those newer trash can-shaped Mac Pros, but sometimes, depending on the shaders, lighting and raytracing used, even a powerful computer takes a while to render a long shot. Yeah, to avoid having to redo stuff, you have to do lots of test-renders of single frames to make sure things look right. Usually 3D rendering is done as an image sequence - each frame is a separate picture file - so if something interrupts the process, the whole shot is not lost. You just resume from where you stopped. That's also handy if you need to redo only a small part of the shot.

CaptainDisillusion

Thanks! Yeah, the in-phone animation also had one frame of the rendered cabin animated to enter frame toward the end. I mentioned it in my filmed explanation, but this video was running so long, I had to cut some things out. It was a VFX TMI.

Really amazing. I myself have been doing a lot of 2 animation in after effects, but nothing comes close to the complexity of what you're doing, with Blender and DaVinci in the mix as well. Thanks for this BTS!!

This was fascinating to watch! In the original video I was sure you had filmed on an actual set with a green screen outside the window. I think a lot of other people other than Patreons would be interested in this sort of thing. I know I wouldn't mind if you created another channel to share your behind the scenes and tutorials with the general public!

Very interesting, thank you! I've done some cell animation and compositing (using Carrara 8 Pro, Flash, Poser, Bryce, and After Effects CC, though I'm not in your league). Where I completely fall down is building realistic 3D models. I just don't have that talent. If I can't build the scene completely from pre-built models, I'm sunk. It's amazing how many disciplines you are good at. Thanks for the tutorial!

CaptainDisillusion

Cool! Yes, 3D modeling is a complicated art form. I know some people who are great at it, but they put in countless hours of practice. Coincidentally, I'm planning to put out a tutorial on modeling & shading after this month's episode!

I noticed it... I was wondering how you made it look so good... :D

When I first saw the airplane clip, I just thought; Hey, Cap. D got out of the red room! Never gave up to my eyes its CGI-ness. Very well done!

IT WAS FAKE?!? I THOUGHT IT WAS REAL!!!! HOW ARE YOU SO GOOD AT EVERYTHING?!?!

It is one of the best shots of all the episodes! Perfectly done! Glad I found!!! Congratulations once more Captain!
