Floating City DEBUNK

Captain Disillusion soars above the rest with a thorough explanation, deconstruction and recreation of the 'Mysterious Floating City Over China' video.

Great video. I hope CNN picks your video up.

Amazing episode, I really enjoyed it. It's really cool to see you not only explain how it was done, and about mirages, but also to recreate it. And I couldn't help but laugh at the media criticism. Nice job on the ducktales reference too.

So good. So, so good. Btw, do you keyframe Mr. Flare by hand, or do you somehow magically pipe the amplitude of the soundtrack to his animation?

Can't find a USB4 cable to charge my SlackWave :(

I was very pleased to see a Darkwing Duck reference in this video. Totally worth the money I am contributing.

That was awesome! I haven't seen the floating city video but I was just in Dongguan, China last month. It wasn't me, I can barely video a few buildings and upload that to YouTube. What I liked most was your message that no one checked sources and bought completely into the mirage idea as it was the most comfortable answer. You are 100% correct about the media (and public) using Wikipedia for their information. We at GSoW are trying very hard to get great content onto Wikipedia (focusing on the lede, as we know that is all most people read) but in this case the good content was there, the media was too lazy to read it all the way through. Many times we are finding that the media is just copy/paste Wikipedia into their articles. One I found had the little citation numbers still in their article but with no citations used, just the numbers! How lame is that? Terrific work as usual!!!

Thanks again Capt D. Love mr Flair, keep him coming back.

CaptainDisillusion

Thanks. Mr. Flare is a few different flare effects stacked on top of each other. The high frequency flickering is controlled with an expression, but where the flickers start and stop is keyframed by hand. One of the flares is also resized by hand to emphasize certain vowels. I've experimented with using the audio to drive it, but manual key framing seems to add more character.

If I didn't consciously edit myself during the writing process, there would be a reference to some 90s Disney animated show in every single episode.

Jim Battle

Solid work, Captain D! I have a teenage daughter and I always show her your videos when they come out to make her a little less gullible and to think a bit before believing what she sees online. Your short passage about the media being in the entertainment industry, not the fact conveyance industry, is an important one.

Ahhhh. Patreon money welll spent!

Timmo Warner

Excellent episode! And I'm really loving the improved silver face.

Doug Wills

That was awesome. Nice Metaskills.

The embodiment of quality.

Guess what, I missed this one too; as usual. And it seems to be quite a biggie this time. Had I read about it somewhere I'd have known where to come for the cold, harsh logic of reality presented in yet another quality presentation of fun, excitement and hilarity! (and harsh reality) it's very sad that so many 'reputable' media outlets chose to go with the warm, fuzzy fantasy option but the world's a bit like that these days. Personally I'd rather know the truth than be whisked away on some conspiracy theorist's escape from his awful life. And anyone who gives the Independent and Daily Mail a swift knock while they're at it is a greater man than all those who work for that overexposed gutter-press.

Excellent

Top notch CD. Thanks for this.

*This* is why I support you, Captain. Excellent video, informative, educational, and entertaining. Just great.

Jim that is a great idea. I think I'm going to have to remember these when I have gullible friends that need a wake-up call. Its a pleasant way to say "see, don't believe everything!" Very entertaining and professionally done, and I know him. :-) People watching will learn without really knowing that you are trying to prove a point. That reminds me, the video is live, so I'm going to share it around my social media. :-)

if I click on the above Facebook icon, then it wants to post the URL to this page, will people be able to see the video? It says Early Access Pass, Should I just share from the YouTube link? What would be more effective?

CaptainDisillusion

Even though the video is now visible to all, this page is only visible to patrons, so yes, to share, you should link directly to the video playback page on YouTube (accessible by clicking the title inside the player or the YouTube logo watermark.) Thanks :)

Perfect CD episode - informative, skeptical, funny. Well done (as usual).

I still think you could do a great video on the Warraq "Marian Apparition". I only have limited video-making skills (this is the best I could do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFZfWWeAGiM), but I'd be happy to help you find useful footage of the event and photos of the church in question.
