Hello there dear Habsburgs and Bourbons,

it's another new month and an inspirational post before you. We've talked the "Mantua" gowns in the Outfit Creation Guide lately, that's why we're of to "The Favourite" today.

"The Favourite" is a 2018 period black comedy film co-produced and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, from a screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. Set in early 18th century Great Britain, the film's plot examines the relationship between cousins Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Masham (Emma Stone), who are vying to be Court favourite of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman).

The aesthetical concept for this movie is particularly interesting with Sandy Powell's costumes very much in the front. The production team decided to film this picture (most of the scenes) with pretty wide lenses and with a very toned-down color palette (very much like Skyrim ;) ).

The costumes had a very limited budget and it was literally impossible for Powell's studio to produce that many sumptuous gowns in a proper way - with hand embroidered details and so on. She decided to use cheaper materials in black and white and use laser cutting to achieve this 18th century richness.

It worked perfectly in my opinion and I strongly recommend you this movie also because of brilliant performance by all the ladies. And spoiler alert, I really like movies that don't have a happy ending ;)

I recreated some Lady Sarah's gowns and they're available at my Nexus

Have a pleasant weekend!

K.

I was thinking indeed of adding a panier and a skirt to the stays but first I'm thinking of some 17 century revival ;) Actually Lady Sarah wears pants along with the stays in the movie ;)
