Wow, that's a strange line they draw between character evidence and evidence of credibility. How is showing that the witness "must not be that credible of a person" not a claim about their character?

It would make more sense if they considered credibility an *exception* to the rules about proving character. Instead of pretending that it's somehow not a part of character. That's how hearsay works. The exceptions to the hearsay rule are still hearsay, but they're hearsay which is admissible.
