Serious question from a non-lawyer (me), what is the difference between slander, defamation, and libel?

Anonymous

I use open source software whenever possible. No BS shrink-wrap stuff. Just the GPL or similar license.

Slander and libel are both causes of action for defamation. Defamation is the action of lying about a person in a manner that causes the subject of the lie’s reputation to be damaged. If the defamation leads to personal, professional or legal troubles they can bring an action for: libel if the defamation was published; or slander if it was spoken.
