Love this movie! Most of your criticism is with the added scenes and footage that you watched in the extended cut. They rightfully cut it out of the theatrical version.

Anonymous

Damn! I have the theatrical cut. I recorded it off HBO. I'm of the opinion that Ashleigh should do the theatrical release on a first time watch. That was the way it was originally meant to be seen.

Anonymous

I rented it from Redbox.com and it synced up fine.

Cosmic Slice

Yes, Bill Pullman was in Sleepless in Seattle as the fiance to Meg Ryan's character. He was also in A League of Their Own as the husband to Dottie (Geena Davis). A couple of notes -- the father of Goldblum's character gave him Air Force One air sickness bags before they left and he gave his father a Torah and a Yakama because he said he hadn't talked to God since his wife's death. And this should **not** give you nightmares because Area 51 does not have anything to do with aliens and in reality an alien race would have no way of knowing humans even exist. With how slow light travels, any race looking at us would be seeing the dinosaurs roaming the Earth.

Thomas Snyder

Can't get the sync right :-(

This was my first time watching the extended cut version, and I’m glad for the theatrical version they cut what they cut. Most of it is not needed, especially the sick kid subplot. But this was a fun watch along 😁 Happy 4th of July, everyone 🎆🇺🇸

Florian Hoyer

you really need to say what version you watching its rly impossible for me to sync it xD

Florian Hoyer

as she probably onyl watch it once thats not a good idea as alot movies are better in the directors cut. imagine only watching lotr in theatical version still i have no extended independence day so i am angry xD

Ashleigh, please let us know the length and frame rate of the source files that you're watching, because I can't sync with what I got. :(

You’re assuming no alien races have achieved mastery over gravity/space-time. Theoretically, there could be races out there that are millions of years more advanced than we are and if that technology is attained, travel could but instantaneous between here and there, infinitely faster than “light speed”.

Cosmic Slice

There are finite ways that a race could theoretically travel through space, most likely would be via what we think of as wormholes or having the ability to fold space. Nothing can travel faster than light and you cannot alter how fast light travels through space. If you haven't read "The Physics of Star Trek" yet, I would take a look at it since the author breaks down how realistic the physics is. And I will admit to my bias here since I work for the theoretical physicist that authored it, lol.

Nick of Time

Isn’t that what I was talking about? Controlling gravity/space-time would be creating wormholes (or inversely, gravity bubbles). Traveling from point A to B instantaneously would be *faster* than traveling between those points at light speed.

Nick of Time

Regardless, I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on the various UFOs I’ve seen that certainly don’t seem to adhere to any mainstream physics.

Cosmic Slice

But the ability to travel by controlling space doesn't mean that you can travel faster than light because nothing can do that. And that doesn't impact the fact that a civilization that is/was advanced enough may or may not exist at the same time that we do. Keep in mind how slowly light travels through the universe. Even if that civilization knew exactly which planet to look at to see Earth, they would not be seeing humans at all because we have not existed that long in a cosmic sense. They would be seeing Earth as it was thousands or even millions of years in the past. It's not that likely that if they were looking for planets to visit, that this planet would be viewed as that interesting.

Oouga

Y2K: we felt that the computers weren't capable of changing over the dates, so all banking information would be corrupted or lost. Among other things. The "fife and drum" in the scene where the small craft first lifts off after Will volunteers: it's reminiscent of the Fife and Drum played during the American Revolutionary War.

I think the main problem with them being unable to stop the bleeding is it's just an infirmary in Area 51, they're not a trauma center hospital equipped with the type of general surgeons to handle that type of thing. Love this reaction, so glad you did it!

Nick of Time

I understand that folding space doesn’t make you travel faster than the speed of light. But you can walk through a wormhole at 5 mph and come out 75 million light years away instantly, while going at light speed would take 75 million years. So the portal option doesn’t make you faster per say, but it decreases travel time. Is that worded better? And I’m still curious what you think of UFOs which certainly do exist. (Legitimate UFOs mind you, not talking about planes, satellites, stealth bombers, shooting stars or anything else easily explainable)

Cosmic Slice

Yes, being able to fold space would decrease travel time. BUT...why would they come here? Consider that even if they knew exactly which planet Earth was, what reason would they have to come here? There are no resources here that make it unique enough to warrant it and they would not know that there is any (somewhat) intelligent life here. We are an extremely tiny planet in an unremarkable solar system in an equally unremarkable part of the known universe. As for UFOs...there are few. And they likely have other explanations. I very much doubt they are extraterrestrial in origin. What would make you think that any species advanced enough to fold space would come...here??

Opti_Frog

I agree with Cosmic Slice. If we ever encounter technology from an alien species millions of years more advanced than us, it will most likely be in the form of self-replicating probes. If an alien species had built such probes it would only take a few million years for the galaxy to be covered with them. We would have detected them in our own solar system by now. Since we haven't, advanced civilisations are probably few and far between. I very much recommend the Self-Replicating Robots and Galactic Domination episode of PBS Space Time for more.

Nick of Time

Why might an alien race come here? There could be countless reasons. And that race might not even be coming here from outside our solar system. One such theory is that our asteroid belt is the remains of an exploded planet, and that planet’s occupants came here and seeding the Earth. I’m not saying that’s what happened, but it’s possible. Anything is possible really, and to say otherwise is very narrow minded.

Cosmic Slice

It's not "closed minded" - it's knowing the science. And I wouldn't say *anything* is possible as you have to work within the framework of the laws of physics and the universe. For perspective -- I work for a theoretical physicist/cosmologist that has actually studied the beginnings of the universe, I curate over 30 sites about science and scientists and I read not only a massive amount of books on the topics, but also research articles. We know that the asteroid belt did not come from an exploded planet. It's material that never formed into planetary bodies, cosmic leftovers that were pulled there by gravity. And panspermia is a complicated topic. While the building blocks of life could be transferred throughout the universe, the only lifeform that can survive in space are things like the tardigrade. And no...there really are not countless reasons for any form of an alien race to be interested in this planet. Only humans think that we're special. We're not. We are just evolved great apes living on an unremarkable planet. And we've been here for just a speck of time on the cosmic scale.
