I have a friend of the channel, Jeff, who helps the channel out when it comes to these movies.  He never asks for anything because he genuinely just likes sharing with me.  He only had one request - that I watch this.  So I know it's random, it was never on a poll, but I wanted to Watch his favorite movie for him.  He doesn't even know I'm watching it - so it will be a fun surprise for him tomorrow.  Just to explain where this movie came from and why I'm watching it. :)

A classic! Even if it is not 'The Godfather', I heartily approve!

Omg! Sneakers! Fantastic. I'm so happy

Great movie

I suspect this will spawn a lot of Robert Redford recommendations.

Jerrod Acree

This is just a little gem that a lot of people don’t know about that is a really good film.

James Earl Jones was not only the voice of Mufasa, he's the voice of Darth Vader. He's also the king of Zamunda, which tells me you need to add "Coming to America" to your list (the 1988 original, not the 2021 sequel).

Anonymous

also the voice of Darth Vader

Anonymous

Wow. This one came out of nowhere. Not complaining though. This nice of you to do that for Jeff. It's been a long time since I seen it. I don't mind a refresher of what it was about.

Anonymous

I saw this when it first came out. Funny and suspenseful. The actor who did Mufasa's voice in Lion King is James Earl Jones. You also know his voice from Star Wars. He did Darth Vader's dialogue. He also is voice that says "This is CNN." I knew you would like Robert Redford. If you want to see him younger then watch The Sting. I've been pushing that one for a while. If you liked this one, then you would love that one.

OMG this is one of my favorites of all time, was _not_ expecting this! Thank you Ashleigh!

Gio Vidrio

We all need to take a moment and realize how selfish we can be. We can all learn something from Jeff. Great movie suggestion!

I think River Phoenix would of had a Leonardo DiCaprio career if he didn't die so young. I think Stand by Me needs to be added to the polls. River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Keifer Sutherland, and Richard Dreyfuss

Anonymous

Another good movie with River Phoenix is Love You To Death. It also stars Kevin Kline, Tracey Ullman, Keanu Reeves and William Hurt. Very underrated comedy.

Anonymous

Oh I agree Bill, great movie.

Thomas Monk

I’m 54 years old, born and bred in America... I know the actors.... and never heard of this movie.

Thanks Jorff

Is SCRUNCHIE in the dictionary? And don’t Google it! It has to be a book dictionary from 1992 or before.

Cristina Collins-Armstrong

I remember watching this in a preview screening my first time in college. Me and my friends all loved it and it saddens me that more people are not aware of this great film. I miss going to the college theater because we got to see a lot of films in preview screenings. The ones I still remember are Army of Darkness, So I Married an Axe Murderer (free soundtracks were given out with that one and I lost mine in one of my moves) and a Michael Keaton/Nicole Kidman weeper called My Life. I loved Army of Darkness as a fan of the first two Evil Dead films and So I Married an Axe Murderer still holds up but My Life, not so much.

Anonymous

Awesome. Didn't even know this was on your radar.

JayF

If you want another good spy movie with comedy that flew under most peoples radar try The Man With One Red Shoe.

Anonymous

Good movie. Based on a French film, "The Tall Blonde Man With One Black Shoe."

Anonymous

is he the one that gets you the movies?

Anonymous

James Earl Jones also voiced Darth Vader.

Anonymous

Excellent choice today! It’s been some time since I watched this one and I couldn’t agree more with the pick. There are many other great movies along the same vein so I hope we get to those in the future as well!

Anonymous

Love the reaction never saw the movie but shout-outs to the great Sidney Poitier("The Defiant Ones", "To Sir With Love", "In the Heat of the Night" and many others) and Ben Kingsley("Gandhi")...never was a big Redford fan though...that car was a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia I can remember when they used to be everywhere lol...and I feel for Hubben I hate driving over bridges too(In my case though the bridge I avoid is an ancient rusted out piece of crap that is constantly having repair work done on it I get stressed every time I have to drive over it which I have to every so often when the other route home from work is closed lol)...Have a Blessed rest of Sunday Ashleigh! :)

Shadowcat

You absolutely must put Dances With Wolves on a poll sometime. It has the lovely Mary McDonnell (Liz) in it and it's a hell of a movie. Also, for another less-well-known Robert Redford movie, try Legal Eagles. I think you'd really enjoy it!

Anonymous

And I hope the Hallobeans winner coming up is "The Fly"(1986) ihopeihopeihope :)

Peter Yocum

At first it was funny, then weird, then downright eerie, how many of the references from this 29 year old movie seemed barely out of date at all (other than the low-res graphics and text interfaces). Hooking up for dates through computers, biometric security, everything being controlled by online data and using it to manipulate what everyone believes is reality.

Vicky phillips

You wanna talk about hotness, see Paul Redford back in the day, 🤤🤤. Also RIP River Phoenix an 80s hottie

A good companion movie for this is War Games. It's by the same writers

T.J. Gengler

That's exactly what I was thinking with Redford and Fonda in BAREFOOT IN THE PARK (1967). It's great classic comedy that also features the great Charles Boyer.

Wally Hartshorn

In his prime, Robert Redford was the very definition of “handsome actor”. I highly recommend watching “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” from 1970, starring Redford and Paul Newman, another very handsome actor in his prime. It won multiple Oscars and still holds up today.

Tyler Foster

Another recurring actor: The guy who played Werner Brandes, the man whose office they break into, also played Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day. His name is Stephen Tobolowsky, and he's been in so many movies that he's often referred to as a "That Guy" actor, who just appears in so many things and is recognizable but isn't a household name kind of movie star.

Anonymous

That's so funny it shows the Twenty year age difference. The first person you thought of when hearing James Earl Jones was Mustafa. My first person to say would be the voice of Darth Vader. Another great review.

Anonymous

also the voice of Darth Vader. LMAO!!!!! yes also Lion King. blessings namaste

Mark Sylvester

I've kept my movie suggestions to a minimum but there are two movie I think Ashleigh would like and I haven't seen them mention much or at all.

Love Sneakers, such a fun movie. Your reaction to it was a fun surprise! Feel better, Sweet Beans.

Manuel Johnen

"Sneakers" is alright, but I've never really been blown away by it... it is one of those movies that I don't mind having on in the background while I'm doing something else and only really focus on it from time to time when one of the better scenes comes up...

Luis Torrefranca

Dropping a plug in for Grosse Pointe Blank. More Dan Aykroyd related fun. Have you watched stuff with John Cusack, yet? Hello to Beans.

Rebecca Monk

Love this movie when it first came out! Haven't seen it again since, but whenever I saw the title - it made me smile. Now I have to rewatch! Btw - you loved Mary so much - we are soooooo gonna have to get you to watch "Dances With Wolves" - but that will be a hoot - since it's almost 4hrs long...lol. WORTH IT!!! But yeah.... if it comes up - you may have to have an intermission...haha.

Robert Redford - "Out of Africa" (1985)

JayWantsACat

I was totally obsessed with this film as a kid. Watching your reactions totally brought me back. Whistler describing the gaggle of geese as a cocktail has always stuck with me. lol

Anonymous

As others have mentioned, Butch Cassidy and the Sting are classics. I'd also recommend the Great Waldo Pepper. A River Runs Through It is a great movie Redford directed and did some voiceover but doesn't appear in.

Anonymous

sneakers is okay, i guess.... no it isnt....i hate this movie, lol

Anonymous

Always loved this movie, but no one else ever knows it! So sad! And that’s a “no” from me for Out of Africa. 😝 I was never even able to sit through it. My mom owns it and remembered really loving it. She just rewatched it a few months ago and said, “Yeah, no. Didn’t hold up, so boring.” But I also recommend The Sting for something similar, and and even younger Robert Redford.

Eric Janssen

I literally haven’t heard anyone TALK about this movie, since it was eh-not-bad in theaters. It just didn’t seem like that much of a stretch, to have Robert Redford play a paranoid leftwing activist, Dan Aykroyd play a looney conspiracy nut, or the Field of Dreams director tell us how much he missed the 60’s. (At the time, it was one of the two or three “Hey, Sidney Poitier’s still alive!” movies in the late 80’s.). This one’s definitely a bizarre Unboxing-present pick—For a moment, I actually checked to see if it was Friday. 😕

Eric Janssen

I JUST (yesterday) had another reactor be the first to react to The Sting on request-tier, and he loved it. Still on his Patreon page, though, hasn’t hit YouTube yet.

Eric Janssen

I definitely think Butch Cassidy and The Sting would be up Ash's alley for future polls...

Elliot Nesterman

James Earl Jones is one of America's truly great actors. Most of his professional life has been on stage rather than on film. On stage he is a veritable force of nature and should you ever have the opportunity of seeing him live grab it. For those as may be interested, his great performance as King Lear in Joe Papp's 1974 Shakespeare in the Park production is available on youtube. https://youtu.be/EXDz6QSTrKM

Elliot Nesterman

Also, Dr. Brandes, the fellow at dinner, was played by the excellent character actor Stephen Tobolowsky, whom you'll remember as Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day.

Brandon Royce

I'm floored that through ALL of the comments, NOBODY has mentioned Robert Redford's, "Three Days of the Condor"!...It's one of the closest Redford films in the same vein as Sneakers.

Anonymous

Agreed. I think she should watch this just prior to Winter Solider.

Anonymous

That reminds me. Ashleigh still needs to watch Field of Dreams and Sandlot. Both have James Earl Jones in them. Both really good movies IMO.

Anonymous

If you want to try a spy movie, give 1985's "Spies Like Us" a go. It's a comedy and has Dan Aykroyd in it for your viewing pleasure.

Anonymous

Finally had the chance to watch this... the whole time we were like, Robert Redford could get it.

Gryff

Yes! I came here to suggest this after watching Sneakers!
