I'm assuming the pink goo is the "ectoplasm" that is often associated with supernatural activities. Also, the gray hair wasn't an aging thing, it's a reference to the cliche idea that your hair can go instantly white from fear. You'll probably see it again if you keep watching horror movies. *... scary stuff, scary stuff* "Nice hickey." *scary stuff, scary stuff...* LOL

It's a shame that with Spielberg behind it, and considering this is 5 years after "Star Wars", that they had some remarkable special effects fails - the tornado, the crappy compositing in the scene with the stuff flying around the room, the awful fake head (face ripping scene). It can be jarring to have those mixed with the other animated and practical effects that are still impressive. That WAS a rotating set in the scene with the mom sliding around the walls and ceiling. About the movie being "Speilberg-esque", while Tobe Hooper is the director of record, Spielberg's influence is very obvious, and there is lots of discussion in the industry about who "really" directed the movie. Spielberg was supposedly often on the set, calling shots and manning the cameras. The fake head did look just as crappy in 1982 as it does today. Remember, we had "An American Werewolf in London" in '81 and "The Thing" in 1982... the skill to do the makeup was there, they just didn't get it for some reason. The movie was rate PG. Bonus : they used real skeletons for that scene in the pool and JoBeth Williams didn't know until later.
