I created a "color machine" preset for Bitwig, inspired by current color-based music production techniques and Virtual Riot's recent work for Avalon Live. This preset is freely available, designed as a note-tuned resonator that can be used with any sound, not just color bass. Here's a summary of how it works and how to use it:

  • Setup: Utilize an instrument track playing chords to feed into a dubstep bass track. The bass track receives notes from the chord track via a note receiver, which then inputs into the color machine to control multiple bandpass filters matching the note frequencies.
  • Voice Stacking: Enables creating chords in multiple octaves from a single octave input by duplicating the note pattern across desired octaves. Adjustments allow for determining the number of octaves generated.
  • Octave Switch & Resonance: Offers the ability to shift the entire bandpass filter range up or down octaves, and a resonator knob to adjust the resonance, potentially to the point of self-oscillation.
  • Filter Options & Stereo Effects: Includes a steepness-adjustable bandpass filter and a Haas knob for subtle stereo frequency shifts in the bandpass filter, adding a stereo effect.
  • Dynamic Processing: Features a match input control for amplitude envelope following and integrated high pass/low pass filters for end signal shaping without needing additional EQ.
  • Additional Controls: An amplifier for output level adjustment, octave distribution for frequency range manipulation, and a quantizer for musical scaling. Rhythmic modulation and pre-tilt EQ for input signal adjustment are also available.
  • Waterfall Effect: A unique effect delaying multiple bandpass filters by varying amounts to create a "waterfall" sound, with options for randomization and algorithm changes to alter the distribution effect.
  • Note Duration Handling: Incorporates an "use AD" option for adjusting attack and decay times, beneficial for varying note lengths, from sustained chords to staccato or arpeggiated patterns.

This preset is compatible with the current Bitwig version (5.1.2), aiming to enhance sound design flexibility while being mindful of CPU usage, especially with voice stacking.

Quite distinctive, as an effect! And it can lead to quite a bit of experimentation.
